🌳 Bucha Forest Classroom Wins New European Bauhaus Award 🌳 Bucha Forest Classroom project, selected as the winning proposal for the New European Bauhaus Co-Create Open Call 2025, stands out among 8 chosen initiatives from across Europe by the EIT Community New European Bauhaus, each receiving a grant of 45,000 euros. A collaborative effort by Bucha School, Restart, and Bucha City Council, the project aims to establish a sustainable outdoor learning space within the serene Bucha forest. This initiative not only fosters mental well-being and environmental education but also addresses the pressing need for additional educational facilities in response to the war created challenges faced by internally displaced children in Bucha, Ukraine. This remarkable achievement signifies a historic moment for Bucha, marking the city's first European Union grant obtained through a competitive selection process. It highlights the exceptional expertise and dedication of Ukrainian professionals while showcasing Ukraine's pivotal role in shaping a more sustainable, inclusive, and beautiful Europe. The project is funded by EIT - European Institute of Innovation and Technology, a body of the European Union. The discussion will address the question of what recovery truly means for Ukrainian society, the balance between preservation and reimagining, and the potential of digital tools and skills to support these visions.   🎤 We’re excited to welcome an incredible lineup of speakers:   Alexander Shevchenko Founder and leader of Restart, Oleksandr specialises in urban and regional planning. His international experience in Germany, Italy, and Malaysia has shaped his approach to adapting global best practices to the Ukrainian context. At Restart, he leads a multidisciplinary team of professionals tackling contemporary challenges of spatial planning, recovery, and decentralisation.   Mariana Kuzemska Head of the Urban Department at Cedos, Mariana focuses on community development and participatory approaches in urban planning. A lecturer in Cultural Studies at the Ukrainian Catholic University and a cultural manager, she worked as the coordinator of strategy, research, and education programs at the Culture Strategy Institute in Lviv, Ukraine, and coordinated the working group on "Strategy for the Development of Culture of Lviv 2025."   Dr. Alirza Mamedov Dean of the Urban and Spatial Planning Faculty at Kyiv National University of Construction and Architecture (KNUCA), Dr. Mamedov has been teaching urban planning and modeling since 1995. He is also one of the founders of the „SchooI of Urban Studies", held since 2017 with the participation of Ukrainian and foreign students, teachers, and specialists.   M. Sc. Anna Kuzyshyn The research assistant at the Chair of Urban Planning at Rheinland-Pfälzische Technische Universität Kaiserslautern-Landau (RPTU), Anna specialises in urban planning and architecture. Tomorrow many Ukrainian NGOs working with USAID will be forced to stop their projects or activity due to the 90-day check of all US-funded programs abroad. I guess some of the projects will be resumed afterward, but some might be terminated. What does it mean for Restart? In our case, we are not connected to the USAID funding but to be honest we applied several times and were not too far from it. 1. we keep on our strategy – competitive product above juridical format. A relevant product on the recovery market will be ok even if one of the financing pipelines is cut. 2. diversify above all – we learned our lesson not to be a mono-dependant agency on one big donor. 3. have a 6 months reserve fund. We are on our way but the reserve fund is for THESE days. 4. being an NGO doesn't mean you can't earn money! grants are good but part of the income generated via sales can save your ass. Sorry no picture this time. The news is no good.

Leading an agency in Ukraine during the full-scale war is somewhat similar to running the marathon for the first time. You have a lot of hints but not all of them are relevant to your context. In Restart we are in a constant balancing between proved practices and new research or prototypes, between suggested and own initiated projects. For us being an impact business via a hybrid model rather than being pure NGO or social enterprise is the most sustainable and meaningful form of activity today. 🌍 Let's #Recap2024 with UN-Habitat Ukraine through a series of insightful events that shaped our journey this past year! In December, the Ukraine Urban Lab facilitated a series of working sessions across the Lviv oblast, including strategic sessions in Stryi and Drohobych and a public hearing in Truskavets, all part of the ongoing efforts on Integrated Development Concepts. Focused on key sectoral analysis and development opportunities, these sessions engaged working groups and local stakeholders in identifying long-term priorities for urban and socio-economic growth to promote sustainable development across the hromadas. We’ll get back to Lviv oblast in 2025, continuing our work to drive sustainable growth, strengthen local communities, and shape a brighter future for the hromadas.
