About us
The East African Centre of Excellence for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (EACREEE) was established by the East African Community (EAC) and mandated by the Council of Ministers to promote renewable energy (RE) and energy efficiency (EE) in the region. EACREEE´s goal is to facilitate the creation of an enabling environment for renewable energy and energy efficiency markets and investments thus contribute to; (a) Increased access of modern, affordable and reliable energy services, (b) Energy security and (c) Mitigation of negative effects of energy use on the environment and population (e.g. local pollution and greenhouse gas emissions). To achieve these goals, EACREEE focuses on five thematic areas of intervention for promotion of renewable energy and energy efficiency. These include. - Development and harmonization of regional policy and regulatory framework - Creation of awareness and Capacity Building - Promotion of investment and lobbying - Research, development, and innovation - Knowledge management

AWARD ANNOUNCEMENT Join us in celebrating an award received by EACREEE for its outstanding role in promoting energy efficiency in the East African Community through the Energy Efficient Lighting and Appliances (EELA) Project using the regional approach. But what has EACREEE really done to warrant this award? Okay lets go. Regional Policy Development and Harmonisation: EACREEE is developing Regional Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS) and Labels for Lighting and Cooling, Regional Energy Efficiency Policy and Compliance Framework and Guidelines for E-Waste Management for the EAC. Support to Implementation of Regional MEPS: EACREEE provided Portable Lighting Testing Equipment to EAC Partner States to enhance market Surveillance. EACREEE is at the final stage of setting up a Regional Reference Lighting Testing Facility in Uganda and will be available to all Partner States. Bridging Regional Technical Capacity Gap: EACREEE Developed the Open source EELA e-Learning Platform. Conducted several Physical and Online workshops on Energy Efficiency Technologies, Business Models, Financing, Market Development and Regulation. Piloting and Testing of Innovative Business Models: Provided 75% co-financing to SMEs to pilot innovative energy efficiency business models such as ESCO, Lighting and Cooling as Service in Kenya, Rwanda and Tanzania. EACREEE received the award from the Ministry of Industry and Trade at the just concluded Regional Energy Efficiency Conference in Arusha. The Conference was organised by the Ministry of Energy and Minerals (MEM), Tanzania, UNDP Tanzania in cooperation with EACREEE and SADC Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (SACREEE) with funding from the European Union and the Government of Ireland. We dedicate this award to the Government and People of Sweden for funding the EELA through Swedish International Development Agency (Sida) and UNIDO the Lead Implementing Agency of the Project in EAC and SADC. Launch of the EELA Program in ECOWAS: Energy Efficiency for Sustainable Livelihoods in Africa 🌍 The Energy Efficiency for Sustainable Livelihoods in Africa (EELA) program was officially launched in the ECOWAS region, marking an important step toward advancing energy efficiency and sustainable industrial development across Africa. The event took place on 28 November 2024 at ESEF in Abidjan and brought together Honorable Ministers, representatives of regional and national institutions, partners, and stakeholders to discuss the role of energy efficiency in achieving development goals, enhancing industrial competitiveness, and addressing climate challenges. The launch of EELA in ECOWAS represents an important step in fostering regional cooperation while supporting national action. UNIDO, together with its partners, remains committed to advancing energy efficiency to meet Africa’s industrialization goals and global climate targets.
