Last week, the Northern Uganda civil society organisations (CSOs) conference was organised by WECISNET WECISNET and the Civil Society in Uganda Support Programme (CUSP). This event brought together over 150 participants, including 100 CSOs from West Nile, Acholi, Lango, and Bunyoro sub-regions. The theme of the conference was, “Together for Change: Enhancing the Compliance and Sustainability of Civil Society Organisations in Northern Uganda” highlighting the crucial role of civil society in Uganda and the importance of creating spaces for dialogue. The conference offered an opportunity for CSOs to discuss pathways to solutions for the sector challenges, particularly on compliance and institutional sustainability. This included topics on NGO regulations in Uganda, financial sustainability, digitalisation, and strengthening collaborations at the sub-national level as well as refugee response and host communities, a vital issue for the region. During the conference, the Chairperson, Arua District Local Government, Alfred Okuonzi, on behalf the District Local Governments expressed commitment to working with Civil Society organizations. He noted that CSOs need to adhere to the existing legal and policy framework and remain ethical in your work. The CUSP component is co-funded by the European Union and the Federal Republic of Germany. Commissioned by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), GIZ implements the component as part of the Strengthening Governance and Civil Society in Uganda Project. #SustainableDevelopment #CivilSociety #TogetherForChange #WECISNET #GoodGovernance #HumanRights

Last week, UBA convened a multistakeholder dialogue on strengthening the capacities of financial institutions to provide credit and financial services to small-scale farmers in Uganda under the GIZ Uganda Relapu project component on improvement of land governance in Uganda co-funded by EU and BMZ. Under this project, we are implementing initiatives that will contribute towards increasing the number of financial institutions accepting Land Inventory Protocols (LIPs) and Certificate of Occupancy to enable credit access to credit and financial services for smallholder farmers in the districts of Mityana, Mubende, Kassanda and Gomba in Central Uganda. An engagement that was attended by representatives from member financial institutions, district leadership, farmers, Industry Associations, and development partners among others pushed for; 1. More sensitizations on LIPs and COOs to educate small-scale farmers about the benefits and processes of acquiring LIPs and COOs. 2. Continued collaboration in obtaining the Certificates of Occupancy, which remain a barrier for many farmers. 3. Promote policy changes for National Recognition to ensure that the LIPs and COOs are recognized as valid collateral at the national level. 4. Expanding financial literacy programs for both farmers and financial institutions to enhance the understanding and use of LIPs and COOs for extending credit to smallholder farmers.
