Affordable Solar Solutions for E-Waste Hubs in Imvepi Refugee Settlement. In Uganda, there are currently over 1.5 million refugees from different countries including South Sudan, Democratic Repulic of Congo, Sudan etc. Many of these refugees live in settlements over 70km away from the urban centers in Uganda. The settlements are mostly in off-grid areas with no access to electricity. The refugee population mainly depend on off-grid solar solutions for their households, businesses and social institutions such as schools and health centers. A lot of the off-grid solar solutions such as solar lamps, solar radios, etc have quality issues, and short lifespan quickly ending up as e-waste products without proper repair and recycle services available within the settlements. Hence, Energy Solutions for Displacement Setting (ESDS), a project implemented by GIZ Uganda with funding from German Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) developed the idea of e-waste hubs to offer repair, reuse, recycle, and storage services for the e-waste products. Three e-waste containers have been installed in Imvepi, and Rhino camp refugee settlements. For the repair services at the e-waste hubs, there is need for a reliable, clean and affordable power supply. Therefore, GIZ Uganda hired the services of Solar Pesa Uganda to supply and install an affordable and reliable power supply using a solar PV system of 1.9 kWp capacity, Lithium-ion batteries of 4.8 kWh, and an all-in-one inverter of 3 kW with online remote monitoring system. The solar system is monitored remotely using Davix remote monitoring device from Innovex. The Davix device runs on a standard Airtel simcard with 5GB data and signal boasted using 5dbi antenna receiver that makes it possible to monitor the system online using REMOT, a web-based platform greatly enhancing the solar PV system operation and maintenance service. Unlocking access to reliable and affordable electricity for income generation. Solar Pesa completed the installation of a system with a total solar power capacity of 450Wp, Battery storage of 2,400Wh, and Inverter of 1,200W for a salon in Arua (Uganda). The system is financed using our #rent_to_own business model with very minimal initial deposit as a commitment fee. The salon business was paying an electricity bill of 120,000 UGX every month for grid power with frequent power outages forcing them to additionally use a petrol generator that has very high operating and maintenance costs with poor power quality, damaging several of their machines. Now, with the affordable solar system fully supplied and installed by Solar Pesa Uganda , the salon only pays an affordable instalment amount weekly for 18 months, and no more need for a petrol generator. With substantial reduced energy costs, the salon is now profiting more from reliable and uninterrupted power supply from solar & grid enhancing a competitive advantage over other salons during frequent grid power blackouts. Exploring #rent_to_own (R2O) model to unlock energy access in rural areas. In Uganda, where only 47% of the population has access to electricity, with only 35% in rural areas compared to 72% in urban areas in 2022 according to World Bank data for Uganda https://lnkd.in/dDpk2UtE, off-grid solar energy solutions such as solar kits, solar home systems play an important role in increasing access to electricity in rural areas. However, high upfront cost of these solar systems is a big challenge. Solar Pesa Uganda is breaking this barrier by using a rent to own model to unlock affordability of solar lamps and solar home systems in rural and peri-urban areas. In Kitgum district (Northern Uganda), we installed our first system under the rent to own model for a home with installed capacity of 260Wp, 100Ah, 600W inverter, and an MPPT charge controller of 20A. To reduce the renting period to 1 year from 2 years - the customer made a 50% down payment, enabling flexibility for our customers.
