  • This is amazing...

Last week on Friday the Migration team convened a half-day meeting with partners working with refugees and host communities. The objective was to strengthen alignment between programs on refugees/migration supported by the NL Government while providing a platform for advocacy and coordination 💪   Being one of the largest refugee-hosting countries in the world with a model refugee-hosting policy, Uganda currently hosts more than 1.7 million refugees. In line with the Global Compact on Refugees (GCR), the Netherlands supports Uganda in implementing and maintaining this progressive refugee policy in a sustainable manner through strengthening their self-reliance and resilience of refugees and hosts, as well as inclusion of refugees in national systems.   Bringing together the different partners clearly showed the broad range of areas of interest and need in a strong refugee response. Some partners work on education, livelihood and skilling, while others strengthen access to justice, healthcare and psychosocial support. Other topics include critical infrastructure, like WASH, clean energy and digital connectivity, and the collaboration with local governments. The Netherlands collaborates with both local and international humanitarian and development actors. By leveraging the comparative advantage of each and improving coordination and efficiency, the Netherlands puts the humanitarian-development-peace nexus in practice – ultimately boosting overall socia-economic impact for refugees and their host communities ☀️   At the end of the day, the partners were able to interact and learn from each other while influencing EKN support to broaden policy implementation and coordination. It was a platform and opportunity to strengthen linkages in geographical and thematic areas aimed at using resources efficiently for the future. The team looks forward to a similar meeting can take place in the field in 2025! • Today, we mark the conclusion of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence (GBV), but our commitment to ending GBV is far from over and is a journey. At War Child Alliance in Uganda, we stand united in the fight against GBV, particularly in humanitarian contexts where prolonged conflicts and displacements have heightened the risks for women and girls. As symbolized in this powerful moment with our team—hands on our hearts—we renew our shared dedication to ending Gender-Based Violence. During emergencies, all forms of gender-based violence can spike, including sexual and intimate partner violence. 1 in 5 refugee or displaced women and girls living in complex emergencies is estimated to have experienced sexual violence. Trafficking, abduction, and harmful practices such as female genital mutilation and child marriage which often increases during times of crisis. Yet, violence against women and girls is preventable. Prevention must be prioritized and funded from the outset of every humanitarian response, engaging frontline responders, health workers, and communities to create safer, more equitable spaces. As we reflect on this year’s theme, “UNITE! Activism to End Violence Against Women and Girls,” let us recognize that peace and development cannot be achieved without addressing and preventing GBV in emergencies. Ending GBV is not just a call for action—it’s a responsibility we all share. #16DaysOfActivism #EndGBV #HumanitarianAction #WarChildAlliance #Solidarity #GenderEquality

“The journey from Sudan was really difficult. We didn’t eat for days. We saw violence and destruction all around. But the situation here: some days, it feels even worse. Sometimes, some kind people see that we are struggling so they give us some food to survive the day. Then, the next day comes...” - Nyamach (19) The ongoing war in Sudan has displaced millions with over 810,000 seeking refuge in South Sudan: a country already grappling with its own humanitarian challenges. As the crisis deepens, urgent action is needed to address the overwhelming need for protection, healthcare and education, especially for vulnerable women and children. • As a member of Joint Forces Coalition, WCA was privileged to witness the launch of the 2025 - 2027 strategy at Fareway Hotel in Uganda. The strategy focuses on combating violence against children which resonates well with War Child Alliance vision that "No child should be part of war ever". Kevin Ndemera, War Child Africo Regional Director (Africa + Colombia) and Parwez Annis, War Child Uganda Country Director attended and participated during the event in Uganda. They both recommended that the strategy is key to protecting and improving the lives of children. #children #Warchild

  • Tuesday the 19th Nov 2024, WCA Uganda Uganda CD, Parwez Annis (in red vest) with the Head of Programs, Joselyee Kasule (standing in a suit), together with CARE Uganda CD, Apollo Gabazilla (in a white shirt) met the Minister of Relief, Disaster Preparedness and Refugees - Hon. Hilary Onek where they discussed about ECHO-Funded STEPS project that demonstrates our shared commitment to advancing the localisation agenda in Africa, a key aspect of this project. We are grateful for the Minister's leadership, his openness and commitment and we look forward to strengthening our collaboration to deliver sustainable and locally-led solutions in response to Uganda's humanitarian and protection needs. As of now, Uganda continues to host the largest number of refugees in Africa with over 1.7 million refugees and asylum seekers and is the largest refugee response in Africa and the 6th in the world.    #Localization #HumanitarianResponse #LocallyLedSolutions #SustainableResponse #ECHO #WarChildAlliance #CareInterntionalUganda
