African Families in the UK (AFiUK) CIC

As one of the strategic partners in Owned by Oxford, our key agenda is how to ensure economic equity is accessible for diaspora families . Our Co~Director, Jacqui Gitau and others from the OBO partnership attending this conference on how to continue championing #DemocraticBusiness , ie, business models likes cooperatives and social enterprises. This is crucial in helping us support our families and community leaders who are setting up business and self employed initiatives to thrive and become economically independent .

We are looking forward to learning from Dr Sharon Dixon at our Women’s health cafe on Oxford today. Dr Sharon specialises in supporting patients with experience of FGM, experiences of uro-gynaecology, possible endometriosis and women’s health. She has undertaken work exploring equity in research and on partnership priority setting in Femtech. She is currently an NIHR Doctoral Research Fellow at the University of Oxford working to develop knowledge to improve care for adolescents with dysmenorrhoea, focussed in primary care. An altogether excellent learning event which was not only fun and captivating but it really stretched our thinking and c widened our knowledge. A big hearty thanks to Activate Learning college blackbird leys campus for hosting us; and to researchers from the University of Oxford Wellcome Centre for Intergrative Neuroimaging who facilitated the activities Today’s learning was all about the #brain ~ how our brain works to get us out of the #escaperoom , can the brain be trained to cure eyesight problems? What are the different parts of the brain and what do they do? What is your brain doing when you are playing football? These and many other questions got our brains buzzing!! With @Chris parkins from History of Science Museum , @Lena from University of Oxford, Department of Physics , @Timeo from Kennedy Institute of Rheumatology , Millie Khisa and all other AFiUK CIC #ParentAdvocates

On Wedneday 13 November, African Families in the UK (AFiUK) CIC joined other members of the Owned by Oxford partnership to launch a new partnership to support new and early start social businesses in the South and Vale areas of #Oxfordshire. The partners include African Families in the UK (AFiUK) CIC , Co-operative Futures, Aspire Oxfordshire, @Makespace and SOFEA . The project will also collaborate with other well-established local partners, ensuring signposting to mainstream support services and resources, demonstrating the power of collective action in building a thriving community.

Our men & boys family fun was a fantastic session of learning , sharing the space and celebrating togetherness. We had a fun quiz In men’s health that covered discussions on mental health, knife crime, adventurous play, risky behaviour, healthy activities and relationships. We started off in the pool with swimming lessons and aqua play and finished up with a lovely shared lunch , games and discussions about men’s health and well-being . It is critical that we include our Teenagers in these discussions , we are starting early, so that when they are adults we will have normalised awareness and self care of their health needs . In our ongoing “my science my place “ project , we are giving our children and families opportunities to explore the connection of science with their everyday lives and possibly help them make informed choices about their learning goals at school. At this handson learning experience at the History of Science Museum we explored #Time, early time pieces and how our #African people in the near and distant past created systems and tools for measuring time and seasons.
