Big news for the Barbican!     We’re thrilled to announce that the City of London Corporation has approved £191 million in funding for the first phase of the Barbican Renewal Programme.     This critical investment represents around 80% of the funding needed for the next five years of transformative works to preserve and enhance our Grade II-listed building. It will ensure the Barbican continues to thrive as a world-class arts and learning centre, reaching millions with bold and inclusive cultural programming.     The Renewal Programme will sensitively restore and upgrade key spaces, including our iconic brutalist foyers, the lakeside terrace, and the conservatory, improving accessibility, sustainability, and opportunities for creative community use. Recognising projects that demonstrate the highest standards of historic building conservation, CIVIC TRUST AWARDS has named the decade-long Westminster Hall conservation project as one of the finalists of the national 2025 AABC Conservation Award. Dating back to 1097, Westminster Hall has hosted state events for almost 1000 years. Insall and Parliament’s Strategic Estates Team worked in close collaboration to put the built fabric of the Hall in good repair and clean it to improve its architectural presentation, securing the site for generations to come.  Westminster Hall remained open to the public throughout construction works, welcoming students and apprentices to learn from the project.  Congratulations to all involved in this project. We're closing out the year with the news that our masterplan for Loftus Garden Village in Newport, Wales for Pobl Group has been featured as a design case study in Fields in Trust's newly updated 'FIT Standards'. These Standards are used across the UK to guide the provision of new public open space and play, with the new update emphasising the importance of contextual understanding, collaboration and creativity to avoid a tick-box approach. We joined Lands Improvement (LIH) earlier this month to launch the new guidance and a big thanks to CEO Helen Griffiths and LDA Design for highlighting our project in the new guidance. The new Standards can be downloaded here: https://lnkd.in/ejgTXHEA

Congratulations to Tavia Swain as the winner of the 2024 Stephen Croad Prize. The award was presented by Historic Buildings & Places at their annual lecture, held in The Alan Baxter Gallery on 2nd December. The annual award celebrates excellence in new architectural research and writing and honours the legacy of Stephen Croad, a distinguished author, researcher, and archivist of architectural history. Based within our offices in Clerkenwell, the Gallery has become one of the foremost spaces in central London for discussion, debate and exhibitions on the built environment, architecture, urbanism and heritage. https://lnkd.in/dSzwQqc7

A gingerbread model of the University of Greenwich’s Devonport House has been unveiled as part of this year’s Gingerbread City, which sees 50 architectural practices baking for a Museum of Architecture-led exhibition curated around the theme ‘Recycled City’. We are providing engineering advice for the transformation of Devonport House, which lies in the UNESCO World Heritage Site and the West Greenwich Conservation Area. The proposals involve the refurbishment of the Grade II listed building and the construction of a new, highly sustainable building designed by Stride Treglown. The Museum of Architecture - a UK-based charity dedicated to finding new ways for the public to engage with architecture - hopes this year’s Gingerbread City will ‘inspire conversations about cities and how we live in them’. The gingerbread metropolis will be on display throughout December at the Gaumont in Chelsea – itself a 14-year redevelopment project. 

Following a major £12.2m refurbishment, the transformation of the Soane Stable Yard at the Royal Hospital Chelsea has created a free, interactive museum on the history of the Chelsea Pensioners and the Royal Hospital; a Veterans Outreach Centre; a café; shop; and Post Office. As engineers, we worked in collaboration with Peregrine Bryant Architects.   This is the first time in the Hospital's 330-year history that the public has free access to this part of the site, seven days a week. It is also the starting point for tours of the wider Royal Hospital site, led by Chelsea Pensioners, including the Wren Chapel and the Great Hall, where Pensioners still dine today.

As part of the planned park regeneration project, the Crystal Palace Dinosaurs will be getting a lot of attention from next year, with major conservation works planned. Conservators have been working this year to trial repair methods, so that when it comes to the major works the repairs will be as long-lasting and effective as possible. As part of the Square Mile Churches project, we’re developing a comprehensive Framework Conservation Plan in collaboration with Alan Baxter Ltd and Matthew Lloyd Architects. Our team has been visiting a number of historic churches across the Square Mile, each with its own distinctive architectural style and rich cultural heritage. This vital project aims to protect and enhance these iconic buildings, ensuring they continue to stand as enduring landmarks in London’s history. From medieval treasures to later gems, our work focuses on preserving the unique character while ensuring they endure for future generations. Marylebone Square has been named Housing Project of the Year at the 2024 Building Design./Building Magazine Awards. The judges said: “This project was of an extremely high quality, showing elegance and innovation. The team had to deal with the challenges of a constrained urban site, and was praised for the provenance, design use and impact of the materials on the project.” Our work on the £110m scheme created a nine-storey, 25,160 sq m building on the site of the former Moxon Street carpark – the last whole city block in the W1 postcode to be developed. Working in collaboration with E8 Architecture, our structural engineering involved deep excavation below ground to allow for dedicated car parking space within a three-storey basement for all four surrounding streets. Five residential floors containing 79 apartments sit above retail, restaurant and community facilities including a community hall housing a farmers’ market on Sundays. The complex layout of the basement involves multiple levels of transfer structures to accommodate the different uses in the building and limited structural zones due to height restrictions on the building. https://lnkd.in/dcju9hEM David Lankester Gabriele Burelli
