This week I received confirmation that I have been successful in my application to become an Architect Accredited in Building Conservation (AABC). It has involved a huge amount of hard work over the last few years, both in the carrying out of some amazing projects on historic buildings as well as the recording, assessment and learning needed to make the application. Thank you to everyone who has helped me to achieve my ambition, from my mentors at AJA, the clients who have believed in my designs, the contractors and craftspeople who taught me about doing (and some how not to!) and Leicester DAC. I am so happy to be successful and looking forward to looking after many more historic buildings in the future. A great afternoon spent on Monday being shown around Vistry Group’s East Midlands manufacturing site to see their off-site manufacturing processes of their floor cassettes, wall panels and roof trusses. It was also interesting to see all the technologies being tested in their onsite Innovation Centre and to hear about their mission towards net zero. I have recently undertaken the Carbon Literacy training course supported by the Heritage Alliance and Historic England on behalf of the Diocese of Leicester and am pleased to say I have been certified as Carbon Literate. There is so much to be done to reduce our carbon emissions and mitigate climate change. Architects have a powerful influence over energy use in buildings and especially historic buildings where retrofit in relation to moisture control is more complex.
