Conserving the UK's amphibians and reptiles and saving the disappearing habitats on which they depend.
About us
Amphibian and Reptile Conservation is a national wildlife charity (Registered Charity 1130188) committed to conserving the UK's amphibians and reptiles and saving the disappearing habitats on which they depend. Amphibian and Reptile Conservation staff are mainly based at our head office in Bournemouth, Dorset. We also have regional staff based in Cumbria, Nottingham, Scotland, Shropshire, Surrey and Wales. We cover a range of activities to conserve frogs, toads, newts, snakes and lizards. Our current activities include managing over eighty nature reserves, working with schools, researching and monitoring species' populations in the wild, and working with other wildlife organisations, and the public, to influence wildlife legislation relating to amphibians and reptiles.

Every year at ARC we receive calls and emails from members of the public who have accidentally had a lizard or a frog climb into their holiday luggage, and travel home with them. We also get many calls about snakes, toads or any variety of herpetofauna (amphibians and reptiles) that have ended up in the UK unintentionally through a variety of means. You can read our advice on what to do if you find a stowaway at https://lnkd.in/ej2vtyMQ https://lnkd.in/eASrz2R8

📢 NEW REPORT PUBLISHED ARC is pleased to publish its strategy for natterjack toad conservation translocations in England, to help guide decision-makers and land managers. The natterjack toad has been the subject of multiple translocations in recent decades, with almost one third of sub-populations arising from translocation. With the species now listed as Endangered, we think it is useful to have a strategy that helps the sector decide when translocation is a useful recovery tool, alongside the other tools available, as well as setting out further efforts needed including evidence gathering. We welcome any feedback on the strategy. Read the strategy at https://lnkd.in/dVZHYveT ARC thanks Natural England for its support in producing the strategy.

A new element of pool frog recovery is starting to take shape. With funding from Natural England, work has started at Banham Zoo to build a pool frog breeding facility. This will provide frogs that can be used to establish new populations in the wild as part of ARC's reintroduction programme. The project has been shortlisted for the Great British Wildlife Restoration Award. Read more about ARC's work to conserve the northern pool frog at https://lnkd.in/eTgENMBR
🐸Pool frogs which were declared extinct in the UK in the 1990s are now receiving a helping hand! Banham Zoo is reintroducing pool frogs in Norfolk and head-starting populations; raising tadpoles and releasing froglets into restored natural habitat and creating ‘frog pod’ habitats on site 🙌 The pool frog project will boost wild numbers and safeguard the long-term survival of the UK population. The project aims to raise awareness of this rare species and how it is vital to preserve biodiversity for future generations 🐸 🍾This project is one of the 23 in the running for the Great British Wildlife Restoration Award!
