Chief Executive Officer at THE STAFF COLLEGE: LEADERSHIP IN HEALTHCARE

Many thanks to Dr Nikita Kanani MBE for being our guest for the latest Staff College ‘In Conversations with…’ yesterday. In an interview that considered the highlights and challenges of leading complex national programmes under the spotlight, I was struck by Nikki’s emphasis throughout on the importance of coming back to the why and being open to learning from failure and set backs. We talked about the importance of understanding where she finds her own energy to enable her to be resilient. The power of developing diverse teams, and the role of coaching and mentoring in supporting people to develop. We also talked about the barriers and challenges to individuals stepping into leadership positions, particularly women and from traditionally under-represented groups. And considered what those of us already in leadership positions can do to create the conditions for future leaders to learn, experiment and succeed. Perhaps my favourite part was seeing Nikki light up when talking about the excitement, uncertainty and challenge of setting up her recent start-up, Aneira Health, and the sense of purpose and opportunity to re-imagine the next stage of her career it has given her.   You can find out more about Nikki’s considered reflections on the challenges and opportunities of leading in healthcare and developing future leaders 👇.

CEO at Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists | RCOG

Gynaecology waiting lists have grown faster than any other elective specialty since the pandemic and the issues behind the lists are complex and multi-faceted. It is particularly concerning to see that the most deprived areas often face the longest waiting lists. This risks further compounding health inequalities between the most deprived and least deprived groups in our society. Today, the RCOG published a new report titled 'Waiting for a way forward' - looking at the substantial pressure and demand on non-cancer gynaecology services across the UK. The findings are staggering and sadly show that the situation has worsened since the College published our 2022 report. The case for economic investment in Women’s Health is fundamentally clear, with the recent NHS Confederation report citing that for every additional £1 of public investment in obstetrics and gynaecology services per woman in England, there is an estimated ROI of £11. For gynaecology services, the need for investment is becoming increasingly urgent with our report finding worrying numbers of women requiring emergency care for complex, progressive conditions as they wait to see a gynaecologist. Throughout the development of this report, we listened to those waiting as well as those delivering care on the frontline to understand what they think must be done to improve this situation. We know that local leaders are doing their best to deliver care whilst facing operational barriers including insufficient funding for estates and infrastructure and limited staff capacity to take on additional clinics. During our event at the Labour Party conference in September, we welcomed the commitment from Baroness Merron, the Women’s Health Minister, that women’s health and gender equality would be prioritised in UK Government policy and her reference to the importance of tackling waiting lists in gynaecology. It is vital that the Government now follows through on its promise and takes action to deliver an urgent package for women and people waiting for care alongside longer term sustained funding to address more complex systemic issues. Tonight we will host an event at Parliament to launch this report, and I look forward speaking to MPs and members of Government as we continue to push for this vital funding.
