LiuGong 100% Fully Electric Excavator on HS2! ⚡✅ Flannery Plant Hire are pleased to announce the arrival of the first fully battery operated 20-tonne excavator in the UK to HS2’s Euston site operated by Skanska Costain STRABAG (SCS). Working closely with SCS JV, the new LiuGong 922FE 20-tonne tracked excavator will undergo an initial test to determine if the technology could “stand up to the rigours of operating on a busy London construction site”. This summer, SCS JV will actively operate the 922FE on site for a series of heavy civils works and varied tasks to compare the performance and efficiency of the electric excavator with a traditionally fuel powered equivalent. Initial expectations of the LiuGong 922FE are that it will be capable of maintaining a full shift charge, at the same time offering a lower engine noise, zero tailpipe emissions and an enhanced driver experience. James Addis, Works Superintendent, Euston Delivery Unit, said: “We are excited to use innovative technology to eliminate harm to the environment and to our people.” Ejaz Qayyum, Construction Manager, Euston Scissor Cut, said: “Replacing traditional machines with fully electric plant aligns with SCS’s 2024 Environmental and Sustainability Strategy to decarbonise construction activities. The on-site zero-emission capability of this excavator presents significant opportunities for future works, helping to reduce costs and risks associated with ventilation, making it an ideal choice for underground projects”. Paul Hester, Operations Director at Flannery Plant Hire, said, "We have invested in this technology to reduce the environmental impacts associated with operating traditional plant on site. The integration of a 20-tonne electric excavator will revolutionise heavy construction as we know it, leading us towards Net-Zero, aligning with SCS’s Environmental & Sustainability Strategy, and to inspire industry leading opportunities. Through innovative digital platforms, we're delivering Operator Skills Bootcamp learning materials to inmates, giving them the chance to take the first steps toward a career as a Plant Operator. With this program, inmates are empowered to build skills that create a clear pathway to enrolling in our Operator Skills Bootcamps upon release. Thanks to the collaborative efforts of the CSCS delivery team at HMP Wayland and Flannery, we’re seeing real success stories: individuals leaving prison, gaining qualifications, and securing meaningful employment in the plant industry. As part of this engagement, we recently brought our Plant Operator Simulator Van to HMP Wayland, providing prisoners with a hands-on, immersive experience of what it's like to operate heavy machinery.
