About us

The Barbican is a multi-arts, learning, and conference centre in the City of London. We’re a catalyst for creativity, sparking possibilities for artists, audiences, and communities. We’re passionate about showcasing the most exciting art from around the world, pushing traditional artistic boundaries and helping us understand our lives in new and unexpected ways. Each year we present hundreds of different performances, events and exhibitions that entertain and inspire millions of people, create connections, provoke debate, and reflect the world we live in. Central to our purpose is supporting emerging talent, shaping opportunities that will accelerate the next generation of creatives. Opened in 1982, the Barbican is a unique and audacious building, recognised globally as an architectural icon. As well as our theatres, galleries, concert halls and cinemas, we are home to a large conservatory with over 1,500 species of plants and trees, a library, conference facilities, public and community spaces, restaurants, bars, and a picturesque lakeside oasis. Focussed firmly on the future, we’re working on ambitious plans to transform our building, reimaging what an arts centre can be and doing our part to address the climate crisis. Through our work on Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, we will ensure the Barbican becomes a place where everyone belongs – where creativity, enterprise, and learning coexist, and everybody can achieve their fullest potential.

  • As the year draws to a close and we reflect on the end of 2024, we're proud to celebrate Claire Spencer AM, our former CEO, who was recently awarded the Freedom of the City of London. Claire's leadership during her 2022-24 tenure helped us reopen post-pandemic, advance our Equity, Diversity and Inclusion agenda, and lay the foundations for our ambitious Barbican Renewal Programme. Thank you, Claire, for your vision and dedication. As we look ahead to 2025 and our exciting next chapter, your legacy continues to inspire us.

The former CEO of Barbican Centre, Claire Spencer, has received the Freedom of the City of London at Guildhall, in recognition of her leadership of the iconic Brutalist multi-arts and education venue. Instrumental during her two-year (2022-24) term in helping the City Corporation-owned Barbican Centre re-open and re-establish itself following the pandemic, Claire brought leadership and focus to its Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion agenda. Claire progressed the Centre’s Barbican Renewal Programme, an ambitious and vital plan to secure the future of this internationally renowned, grade-II listed site. She played a major role in securing the recently announced £191m contribution from the City of London Corporation for critical repairs and upgrades - around 80% of the total needed to deliver the first phase of the long-term vision. Claire was previously CEO at Arts Centre Melbourne between 2014 and 2022 and prior to that, she held a series of roles at Sydney Opera House, culminating in Chief Operating Officer. #DestinationCity #EDI #mentalhealth #Sydney https://bit.ly/3ZtlEAv

Big news for the Barbican!     We’re thrilled to announce that the City of London Corporation has approved £191 million in funding for the first phase of the Barbican Renewal Programme.     This critical investment represents around 80% of the funding needed for the next five years of transformative works to preserve and enhance our Grade II-listed building. It will ensure the Barbican continues to thrive as a world-class arts and learning centre, reaching millions with bold and inclusive cultural programming.     The Renewal Programme will sensitively restore and upgrade key spaces, including our iconic brutalist foyers, the lakeside terrace, and the conservatory, improving accessibility, sustainability, and opportunities for creative community use. • Over the past six months we have taken part in Culture Makes, a UK-wide initiative run by the Cultural Philanthropy Foundation, which highlights the positive impact of culture and the need for greater investment. This month we’re celebrating our impact in building community. We’re proudly rooted in our neighbourhood in the City of London and collaborate with our local communities and people to create joyful celebrations of the stories they care about. The Imagine Fund was a four-year community grant project developed by Barbican’s Creative Collaboration team, which distributed funding from the City of London Corporation's Community Infrastructure Levy Neighbourhood Fund. Funding was allocated by panels of local community members who identified projects which benefited their communities. From 2020 to 2024, The Imagine Fund distributed over £100k, which helped 65 local people and groups to kickstart their ideas and creative enterprises. See more here 👉 https://lnkd.in/enjeg246

It may be chilly outside, but that hasn’t stopped the roamers, readers and relaxers embracing the outdoors and chasing the winter sun. ❄️⛅ You may need a hot drink and an extra layer, but our colours always shine amid the grey.
