Christmas Candidate Catch-up 🥂 To our great candidates, Charlotte Poulain and I really enjoyed our end of year candidate networking event with you last night. It was great to see you guys together, and a nice way to celebrate the incredible work you do. It was also wonderful catching up with two fellow Newcastle University alumni and reminiscing about our architecture degree days!

Connecting Architects, Designers and Specification Salespeople with employers across Texas

Me: 'What are your salary expectations?' Candidate: '$120,000' Me: 'That's about $25,000 over the market rate for someone with your level of experience. Can I ask how you got to that number and whether you have any flexibility?' Candidate: 'If I'm going to make a move, I'm going to need a decent bump in salary. Otherwise it's not worth it for me.' Me: 'Ok, I can understand that. What are the primary reasons for looking at new opportunities?' Candidate: 'The firm have let a lot of people go and I'm concerned I'm going to be next, so I want to get a head start on the search. We've also gone back to being 100% in-office and so I'm commuting an extra 5 hours a week' I get it. There's a perceived risk regarding moving jobs and there's a lot of noise on Linkedin about how the best way to advance your career, and increase your salary is to move jobs every few years. Yet, the majority of the time the reason(s) candidates are looking for a move has little to do with their current salary. In architecture and design, it's usually one of/or a combination of; - Poor work/life balance - A slowdown in new projects at the firm - Lack of progression opportunities - Lack of flexible working options - No training/development - Wanting a new challenge - Poor culture - Lack of creative freedom If you're unhappy in your current role (besides being underpaid) then consider whether a substantial pay increase should be your driving factor when looking at new opportunities. You may end up pricing yourself out of some great roles.
