How many men are looking for the chance to talk? How much would change, for them, their families and our society, if we opened these spaces? Highlights from a Beyond Equality mini-conference exploring the powerful work being done in the UK and abroad to open up spaces for men to support each other as they process emotions, heal and help create safer and more supportive communities. With a special guest keynote from Aotearoa (New Zealand), She Is Not Your Rehab, discussed their powerful work running men's groups, creating space where men can process trauma, and be part of healing intergenerational cycles of violence. 📽 Featuring Dr Daniel Guinness (Beyond Equality), Matteo & Sarah Brown (She Is Not Your Rehab), Dr Sanah Ahsan & Alex Holmes. Engaging men and boys in workplaces, universities and schools so that they can rethink masculinities and create change.
About us
When it comes to talking about gender inequality at work, more often than not, men are not seen as part of the solution. But the gender pay gap, workplace sexual harassment, maternity discrimination, and unfair hiring & promotion practices will not be overcome by women simply trying harder nor by women “leaning in”. Men must be part of this change. But how? Engaging men in conversations about gender equality can seem daunting - there are lots of potential crossed-wires, insensitivities and awkward language that can make it feel like it’s too much of a minefield to be worth taking on in the first place. And often men don’t see the ways that they too can significantly benefit from more equal and inclusive workplaces. We know that half of the battle is getting past men feeling defensive or like masculinity is under attack. That’s where we come in. --- Beyond Equality runs equality, inclusion and masculinites workshops with men and boys in schools, universities and workplaces.

Through the Premier League's Lifeskills Programme, Beyond Equality delivered our 'Masculinities & Being A Man' workshop to the U16s and U15s boys teams at the Tottenham Hotspur FC Academy last month. We were met with plenty of enthusiasm to explore what it means to be a man both off and on the pitch. We can't wait to head back into the Academy again later this month to deliver more workshops! Instead, the focus should shift to empowering young men and boys by providing them with supportive spaces to explore their potential, build confidence, and embrace healthy growth. https://lnkd.in/eBXCMKzG

The impact of the ways boys and men learn about the roles and expectations of masculinities in their lives can also be felt in the way they find, understand and use information and services to benefit their health (Isaacs et al., 2011; Schuppan et al., 2019; Osborne et al., 2013; Macdonald et al., 2022).’ Movember UK released their Face of Men’s Health, aimed at understanding the current state of men’s health in the UK, and the drivers towards better outcomes in the future. It maps the impact of these health issues on men, those who care for men, and the society as a whole. The report identifies multiple drivers for lower life expectancy for men (4 years less than women), with risk taking behaviours, lower health literacy, socialisation into harmful masculine norms of help-avoidance, and lack of training for some medical services on how to work effectively with men. Notably, these issues are impacting some men far more than others, with the rates of premature death 3.5 times higher in the 10 constituencies with the highest rates vs the 10 constituencies with the lowest rates. 47% of Black men surveyed did not believe their health is equally protected by the NHS. A survey of LGBTQ+ people in the UK (LGBT Foundation, 2023) found that 12% of GBTQ+ men (including trans men) had experienced discrimination in the last year. Health promotion programmes including those which embrace the power of sports and the opportunity of the workplace to reach, respond and retain men. A responsive health system including health services, screenings, checks and facilities designed with men in mind. A health workforce with the competencies to respond to men. Research that works to build, evaluate and translate its findings into practice to reach and benefit all men This is not a binary choice of prioritising men’s health over that women and non-binary people. Instead a gender sensitive approach to health benefits all of us. Beyond Equality contribute through our workshops which break down ‘man up’ stereotypes, helping groups of men better support and care for themselves and each other. Beyond Equality were very happy to contribute to the report, and welcome this important step to mapping out pathways to better health for men in the UK. https://lnkd.in/eK92EFrN

We were at the VAWG Symposium this week with Richie Etherington-Benson, contributing to critical conversations around tackling violence against women and girls (VAWG). The event brought together local authorities, police officers, women’s rights organisations, and other key stakeholders to: ➡️ Examine the scale and drivers of VAWG in the UK ➡️ Explore the Labour government’s ambitious plans to halve VAWG in a decade ➡️ Share best practices for supporting victims, increasing reporting, and improving prosecutions ➡️ Address the role of online influencers and tech companies in driving change At Beyond Equality, we are committed to challenging harmful masculinities and building a society where women and girls are safe and valued. Richie’s presence at the symposium strengthens our mission to support transformative solutions. The pressure to perform is real – but so is the strength in vulnerability. In our workshops men talk about how it can be difficult to express how they really feel for fear of being judged or not being 'man enough'. Most boys tell us that their role models are athletes. But for athletes - every move is judged, every mistake amplified, and the weight of expectation can feel heavy. But what happens when that pressure takes its toll? In this clip for our love podcast for International Mens Day, Daniel Guinness, PhD shares his journey – the highs of competition, the lows of self-doubt, and the courage it takes to admit that being an athlete isn’t just about physical strength. 💬 What people see: ✨ The medals. ✨ The accolades. ✨ The highlight reels. What’s often hidden: ⚡ The constant self-comparison. ⚡ The fear of failure. ⚡ The struggle to balance personal worth with public expectations. At Beyond Equality, we’re breaking the silence around these experiences, because: ✔️ Mental health matters as much as physical health. ✔️ Redefining strength means embracing vulnerability. ✔️ True equality means creating spaces where everyone feels safe to share their struggles. ✨ Let’s start a new conversation: How do we redefine success beyond wins and losses? How do we create communities that value people for who they are, not just what they achieve? How can we better support those navigating the pressures of competition, work, or life? Drop your thoughts and experiences in the comments. Strength is so much more than what meets the eye. Kasey Robinson Ben Hurst Alex Holmes https://lnkd.in/eHAbSEEU

We are doing the work. Let’s step into 2025 with renewed determination and a shared belief: 💡 Gender equality is achievable when men and boys are meaningfully engaged. 💡 Challenging outdated ideas of masculinity can lead to greater purpose, fulfillment, and happiness. 💡 Men and boys can—and should—be allies for women’s rights, LGBTQIA+ rights, and broader social justice.
There are of course many voices sharing their thoughts and feelings on the Gisèle mass rape trial outcomes today. As woman that works at the centre of a sector that works with men and boys on the topic of gender equality, healthy relationships, inclusion and VAWG prevention it’s naturally been a case that has engaged me on a personal and professional level. As I look back on a year of work with Beyond Equality I want to share a clip from this panel event where I talk about the behind the scenes of what it means to do this work with men in workplaces. - The overwhelming majority of people who enquire about our work are women. - Women, despite all of the inequalities they face continue to be the biggest advocates of men getting to do supportive, educative and caring work for themselves and by extension others. - Despite the horrid noise online and in mainstream media about how divisive these topics are, there are solutions. They are working. We are leading them. I feel a great sense of pride and an enormous feeling of responsibility to best translate the work that Beyond Equality does for and with men and boys and this past year we have produced more data, more content and can bring more people into this space than ever. I sincerely look forward to sharing that with you in 2025. My hope, is that our work grows (because it’s literally my job) because I want to share the opportunities that sit on the side of transformational change. I want to see more men engage and enquire and take the step to say ‘we don’t want or do that here, and we’re going to do something about it.’ Thank you to all of our clients, partners, workshop participants, advocates and wider community for all you have done and supported and nurtured. See you in 2025. Daniel Guinness, PhD Ben Hurst Rosephine Fernandes Jayne Ashby MCDI Hanaé Berton and the rest of the Beyond Equality team, thank you to you too.
