Cambridgeshire is home to one of the most unique habitats on the planet 🌍 The water we supply to more than 350,000 customers across the region is mostly abstracted from chalk aquifers which lie to the south and east of Cambridge. These are the same groundwater sources that supply our chalk streams and rivers. There are only around 200 chalk streams in the world, and over a quarter are right here in East Anglia. These rare habitats, including the River Cam, are home to a rich array of native plants and animals, including brown trout, water voles, kingfishers, otters and swans. As well as investing in resilient water supplies and making reductions in leakage and abstraction, we are implementing a chalk stream restoration programme to improve water bodies in our region, protect these precious environments and meet good ecological status. #WorldWildlifeDay #Water #WaterIndustry #Environment #ChalkStreams #Rivers

Today, we had the pleasure of hosting the Institute of Water (IWater)'s Strategy and Development Day at our office on Fulbourn Road. This year, the Institute of Water is celebrating its 80th year and, as well as celebrating the association's success, water professionals from across its voluntary network came together to discuss important agenda items including IWater membership, the motivations behind volunteering, challenging with confidence and strategic planning as we head into the new world of AMP8. Kara Sadler CSci, Head of Water Quality, is National Vice-Chair for the Institute of Water and was delighted to be an integral part of the day: 💬 "Aligning with professional organisations whose values align with ours is more important now than ever. Today has served as a great opportunity for us to collaborate, share our knowledge, work through strategic plans and look ahead to what will be a transformative period for the water sector." #Water #WaterIndustry ##IWaterEvents

Next Thursday (6 February), our Head of Innovation, Mumin Islam, will be leading a thought-provoking webinar with the Institute of Water (IWater) to discuss engaging diverse communities in the water sector. Last year, as part of our Water Efficiency in Faith and Diverse Communities project, funded by the Ofwat Innovation Fund, we worked with Cambridge Central Mosque to establish a better understanding of how water is used and valued in the Muslim community and ran our Reviving the Sunnah campaign 💧 To hear more about our findings, sign up for the webinar: https://lnkd.in/e6f-zBYr #Water #WaterIndustry #IWaterEvents

Earlier today, the Chancellor expressed her support for nine new reservoirs across England including one in the Cambridgeshire Fens, which will help deliver environmental improvements as well as support sustainable growth. Our region is one of the fastest growing in the country. It is estimated there could be up to 10,000 homes built in South Cambridge, Cambridge and surrounding areas over the next five years. Working in partnership with Anglian Water Services, Fens Reservoir will deliver around 44 million litres of water a day to our region, supplying thousands of homes and businesses. By having the capacity to store more water during periods of greater rainfall through the winter months, this will help us reduce the amount of water we need to abstract from our underground aquifers during the summer, and this will also help us to keep more water in our sensitive chalk streams, a key feature of the Cambridgeshire landscape. #Water #WaterIndustry #Growth #WaterResillience

Our changing climate presents a major challenge for our industry 🌦️ Over the next century, we’re likely to see more extreme weather, heavier rainfall in the winter and longer spells of dry weather and high temperatures in summer - affecting both our water supplies and infrastructure 🏭 As a responsible, customer-focused, and regulated business, we’re committed to building a sustainable future. Whilst keeping bills affordable, we will be strengthening our assets and water supply to withstand climate change, all while restoring and enhancing the environment we value 🍃 Read more about our plans for the future in Climate Change Adaptation Report Summary: #GreenWeek #Climate #ClimateChange #WaterIndustry

We love seeing our team putting Green Week into action and really thinking about their own impact in our shared drive to reduce carbon use. Well done Ella!
It’s Green Week here at South Staffs and Cambridge Water and we are talking about all things carbon reduction. ♻️ In Production, it’s hard to see sometimes how we can have an impact but we have been thinking big and looking at chemical consumption 🧪, driving efficiently 🏎️, optimum times to run pump sets and also how efficient our pumps are to begin with 🏭. We have also made simple changes like making sure we turn the lights out when we leave rooms. 💡 Another topic was thinking about the items of clothing we wear! For the past 4 months, I have had the privilege of trying out our new sustainable PPE from LA Safety. The polo shirts are made from 6 plastic bottles, have 1.29kg of carbon emitted and 1010 litres of water are used to produce each one 🦺. The soft shell jacket has a whopping 55 plastic bottles recycled into it and has 17.5% less carbon than a standard soft shell jacket (I can also attest it’s waterproof ☔️). Another thing I celebrate is the fact that this workwear comes in female sizes and designs, they’ve even survived my washing machine test and came out not faded or misshapen. There has been a lot of jealousy over the high-vis jacket! I think it’s safe to say I’m no model and that maybe day glo orange isn’t my colour but I had to show you what this clothing looked like somehow 😂 I can’t wait to see this new sustainable PPE rolled out across the company!
