This week, RICS hosted the launch of the Circular Do Tank. A forum of professionals focused on embedding circular economy principles into construction, renovation, and demolition practices, helping to reduce carbon emissions and waste in the built environment. Richard Golding MRICS delivered a powerful vision of how the CDT will drive circularity in the industry, facilitate data and information sharing, and promote the adoption of circular practices. As RICS President Tina Paillet, FRICS noted in her opening remarks: “A vision without application is a mere hallucination! If we take action to do better, then it is no longer about what could be. Yesterday I had a lovely fireside chat with Tina Paillet, FRICS in Westminster, since becoming RICS President she has made significant strides in enhancing RICS's global presence and influence, particularly in the areas of sustainability and climate action: Circular Economy Initiative: Tina has announced that #RICS will convene and support a circular economy forum, described as a "Do-Tank," which aims to drive pragmatic and practical experimentation in the industry. This initiative will likely have global implications for sustainable practices in the built environment UN Environmental Program Partnership: Tina has highlighted RICS's developing role as a supporting partner of the Buildings Breakthrough, specifically on priority actions in WLCA Standards and Certifications, as a workstream launched at #COP28. This partnership has elevated RICS's global profile in addressing climate change issues related to the built environment. Global Standards Development: During her presidency, RICS promoted a new global edition of the #WholeLifeCarbonAssessment for the Built Environment (WLCA). This standard is set to become a world-leading tool for consistent and accurate carbon measurement in the built environment, enhancing RICS's global influence in sustainable practices and linking this to Digital #Cost,LifeCycle,Carbon platforms for trust and transparency.   Strategy Implementation: As President, she is overseeing the delivery of RICS's new strategy in 2024, which includes enhancing member value, attracting a #diverse next generation of surveyors, strengthening trust in the profession, and leading on sustainability. These goals will strengthen RICS's global position. Global Forum Participation: Under Tina's leadership, RICS experts were invited to brief energy and climate ministers from across the globe at the first Buildings and Climate Global Forum in Paris. This involvement demonstrates RICS's growing influence in shaping global policies and strategies for the built environment. Sustainability Focus: her presidency has strongly emphasized sustainability, aligning with RICS's strategy to lead in this area. She has highlighted the built environment's significant impact on climate change, citing that the industry creates around 40% of global energy-related carbon emissions. Her leadership is focusing on critical global issues, particularly #sustainability and #decarbonization, which are likely to enhance RICS's relevance and impact on the world stage. We discussed issues such as the #BuildingSafetyAct, #DigitalLogbook, #EPD information, UN SDG's metrics, and RICS involvement with #RICSTechPartners. Great to see RICS leadership taking time out of their busy schedule to discuss topics that impact the surveying community.
