A network of architects and built environment professionals taking action in the climate and biodiversity crises.
About us
Architects CAN (ACAN!) is a network of individuals within architecture and related built environment professions taking action to address the twin crises of climate and ecological breakdown. We are in a state of climate and ecological emergency. There is a compelling body of scientific work indicating our present trajectory will lead to catastrophe if we do not make ambitious and radical changes as a matter of urgency. We also acknowledge that the construction industry and the existing built environment are major contributing factors to the crises and as such both require complete and rapid transformation. In the UK, the built environment as a whole is responsible for 42% of national emissions. The manner in which we produce, operate and renew our built environment continues to curtail biodiversity, pollute ecosystems and encourage unsustainable lifestyles. This state of emergency calls for a new kind of professionalism. We can no longer remain secluded within our personal and professional silos. Instead we are harnessing our collective agency; as citizens with a shared professional background and a common goal, mobilising to bring about necessary changes to our industry. We welcome anyone that shares in this vision for change.

How is a building that won the Stirling Prize being considered for demolition in less than 30 years?’ We should be creating structures that endure for centuries and stand the test of time.
‼️ Architects Climate Action Network (ACAN), UK Architects Declare and Don't Waste Buildings join the bid to save Hodder’s Centenary Building. Our organisations have rallied in support of The Twentieth Century Society in questioning the proposed demolition of Hodder Associates’ Stirling Prize-winning Centenary Building in Salford. Architects Declare and ACAN fully support the Twentieth Century Society’s bid to preserve Hodder Associates’ Centenary Building - the pioneering structure that was the first to win the prestigious RIBA Stirling Prize. If we are to reduce carbon emissions to the extent necessary to avoid catastrophic climate breakdown and biodiversity loss, upgrading existing buildings, as opposed to building new, must now become the default. Material Index #Deconstruction #Auditing #Insights: Each building or site we work with presents a chance to develop and work with new #innovative technologies….or visit the archives. I’ve been to a few talks recently (Architects Climate Action Network (ACAN), #ASBP) that highlight the barriers and lack of accessibility in building #data. Often, key record information and component data is stored in complex software or models (for newer schemes), or hidden within archival information (older buildings). As most of our #audit team have architectural training we are fluent in most BIM softwares (Autodesk Revit, #Rhino, Matterport, #Pointcloud etc.) and are passionate about detail. We enjoy reviewing building information thoroughly and pairing this with our own insights gained from our detailed site survey using the Material Index Platform. Recently with our clients we have: 🔢 Scheduled material quantities from Revit models with demolition phasing. 🏗️ Used Matterport scans to supplement site data capture, access restricted areas and remote sites. 📐 Conducted in-depth analysis of archival drawings to produce structural estimations. Our Material Index Platform is the easy to use interface that stores all this information in one place. The data is stored in an accessible format (no software skills required!) and brings all stakeholders together, ultimately increasing reuse across projects. We’ll also donate, sell and move your materials for you, reclaiming value too. 💷 get in touch for - audits: audits@material-index.co.uk Bora Malko Niko Brewster Felix McCabe Leah Hartley - materials (supply or demand): materials@material-index.co.uk Oliver Lawson Robert Smith Eshe Lane

Architects Climate Action Network (ACAN) hosted a thrilling webinar diving into the nuance of paint. More specifically the concern of how we see it, use it and dispose/reuse it. It was disappointing to find out how much paint impacts the environment after understanding how much plastic is present in conventional paint. Dr Timothy Meek spoke wonderfully about the future of buildings and how modern day plastic paints will not adapt to climate change. He mentions of transitioning to natural methods, and back to European architecture facades which never used paint to begin with. I agree with him in suggesting to go back full circle, and back to materials we now see as 'old' and 'obsolete'. I was pleasantly surprised to also find out their are grassroots movements to mitigate this impact by going to natural paint compounds and pigments instead of the plastics we use too commonly. Anton Boekhoudt spoke for KEIM UK, who provide this solution by using only natural binders, pigments and compounds that allow breath-ability. A perfect solution that is future proof but still needs regulation and policy backing to make it more common place in the industry.

The past was technicoloured. Buildings were coated and coloured and our oceans are chock full of plastic from modern paint.... But it doesn't need to be that way! Want to know a whole lot about paint and coating buildings you possibly should have known before? Then follow the links below to listen to six absolutely fantastic speakers Caroline Nicolay, Michiel Brouns, Edward Bulmer, Paola Paruta, Dr Timothy Meek and Anton Boekhoudt give their broad but deeply connected accounts on the subject. The Architects Climate Action Network (ACAN) Natural Materials group has just finished putting together this mini-series on paint and coatings and there is a wealth of information in the two videos, now online and free. Tell your friends. Prehistoric paint, linseed paint, non-plastic emulsion, plastic pollution from paint, lime coated masonry and silicate paint all covered. But that description doesn't come close to doing the presentations justice. Take a look yourself!
