Big news for data portability fans! Google has finally confirmed it will enable users to transfer their Google data to third parties on an ongoing basis - for 6 months at a time. This is a huge development and will finally bring Google's data portability solution into line with the other gatekeepers, and a place where a sensible conversation about DMA compliance is possible. But there is always a sting in the tail. It says it will not release the new functionality until late February 2025, almost one year since the original compliance deadline 🤯 In Brussels on Monday, I will be asking the European Commission if such a long delay to compliance is acceptable. #dataportability #digitalmarketsact #google #DMA #CODE

Booking.com has now released its very own data portability API, following in the footsteps of the other #DMA #gatekeepers. [POST UPDATED] Despite our requests for wider geo availability, it seems that Booking has chosen to restrict availability of its new tool for users in the EEA only. So Booking has made a deliberate choice not to support data portability requests for its UK users, despite the UK GDPR making this their legal right where it is technically feasible. What do Google, Meta and TikTok have in common? They have all now voluntarily implemented their new data portability solutions in the UK, taking their DMA compliance solutions outside of the EU's borders. As I say in the blog below, "TikTok deserves a great deal of credit for changing course and implementing the change so quickly.
