🌍🌐 Collaboration is key for advancing Destination Earth. Just over six months into phase II of the #DestinE initiative, experts from all over Europe met in Hamburg for a project meeting and hackathon to discuss crucial next steps and accelerate progress of the Climate Change Adaptation Digital Twin (Climate DT). The Climate DT is implemented by a strong partnership led by CSC – IT Center for Science, in close collaboration with ECMWF. 💻 The four-day hackathon was a perfect opportunity for scientists to work collaboratively on the challenges identified in the project meeting. A major theme of the hackathon was the use of #AI and #MachineLearning and how they can be used to quantify uncertainties in the Climate DT outputs and enhance user interaction. 🇪🇺 The Destination Earth initiative shows how collaboration throughout Europe can drive innovation and progress for tackling the most pressing climate challenges, by bringing together diverse expertise from research, operational centres and industry. 🎥 Watch the video below to hear from scientists about the collaborative work on the Climate DT. About us
The European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) is an independent intergovernmental organisation supported by 35 states. ECMWF is both a research institute and a 24/7 operational service, producing and disseminating numerical weather predictions to its Member States. This data is fully available to the national meteorological services in the Member States. The Centre also offers a catalogue of forecast data that can be purchased by businesses worldwide and other commercial customers. The supercomputer facility (and associated data archive) at ECMWF is one of the largest of its type in Europe and Member States can use 25% of its capacity for their own purposes. The organisation was established in 1975 and now employs around 500 staff from more than 30 countries. ECMWF is one of the six members of the Co-ordinated Organisations, which also include the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO), the Council of Europe (CoE), the European Space Agency (ESA), the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), and the European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT).

❗New job opportunities at ECMWF in support of ‘Space for Early Warning in Africa’❗ European Commission DG INTPA aims to stimulate partnerships to develop space-based services, applications and tools to strengthen #EarlyWarning Systems of hazardous weather and climate- related events. Subject to approval, the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts is anticipated to be one of the implementing partners. ECMWF has currently two exiting new positions in support of these activities: - Partnership Management and Training Specialist (A2): https://lnkd.in/ev6fTSE8 - Data and Cloud Support Specialist (A2): https://lnkd.in/e83sJP23 Activities will be implemented in close cooperation with EUMETSAT and African Union Commission and close partnerships will be established with the African RCCs and the European #NMHSs and other topic specialists on #earlywarning, as well as with World Meteorological Organization and its #EW4All initiative.

Since early November high levels of air pollution have been affecting the Indo-Gangetic Plain. Our #CopernicusAtmosphere data shows how high concentrations of fine particulate matter PM2.5 have been accumulating from north-eastern Pakistan and across northern India to Bangladesh. Air pollution episodes like this are common in the region at this time of year, due to the particular orography, atmospheric circulation and crop residue fires. However, the current situation is exceptional and considered hazardous to health: During many periods between 10 and 20 November, CAMS data showed concentrations of PM2.5 exceeding 300 µg/m³ across large parts of the region. The World Health Organization recommends targets of 15 µg/m³ daily and 5 µg/m³ annual mean concentrations not to be exceeded. Read our latest article for all the details: https://lnkd.in/eXx99q_X

🌍🌐 It’s been an exciting week for Destination Earth (#DestinE). It was the second time since its launch that the DestinE initiative of the European Commission was featured at a COP panel. 💬 “The panel highlighted the value of digital twin information, like the one produced in DestinE Climate Change Digital Twin for sensitive regions such as the Arctic regarding climate change,” concludes Irina Sandu, Director for Destination Earth at ECMWF, about the COP29 Azerbaijan panel on global and regional approaches to cryosphere and related climate challenges. Irina Sandu also emphasised how the DestinE Climate Digital Twin (Climate DT) is a game-changer, offering a capability to perform multi-decadal climate projections both regularly (e.g. yearly) and on demand. The discussion highlighted using this data to address Arctic climate challenges, with contributions from experts like Avijâja Rosing-Olsen (Ministry of Agriculture, Self-Sufficiency, Energy and Environment of the Government of Greenland), and Sea Ice Scientist Till Soya Rasmussen (Danish Meteorological Institute DMI). 📽️ Watch the panel session and find more information ➡️ https://lnkd.in/ekst7yBW
