A great report released by our friends over at FAIRR Initiative highlighting the issue of antimicrobial resistance generated through the use of antibiotics in animal agriculture 💊 #AMR Emma Berntman, PhD, Anna Shattles, Megan O'Brien, Jo Raven
LAUNCH: FAIRR is pleased to share the release of its latest report on antimicrobial resistance (AMR), ‘From Farms to Forks: Antibiotic Stewardship in the Animal Pharmaceutical and Quick Service Restaurant Sectors’. The report is a progress update on two of FAIRR’s collaborative investor engagements: Animal Pharmaceuticals and Restaurant Antibiotics. It assessed the corporate practices and policies related to antibiotics of key companies operating within 2 different stages of the animal protein value chain, looking at 12 of the largest quick-service restaurants (QSR) in North America and 7 animal pharmaceutical (AP) companies. This update comes in a critical year for galvanising global efforts to tackle AMR, with the United Nations General Assembly High-Level Meeting on AMR taking place in September 2024. Reducing the misuse and overuse of antibiotics in #AnimalAgriculture has become an increasingly important area of focus: if left unaddressed, AMR could be responsible for 10 million annual deaths and lead to an annual decline of up to 3.8% in global GDP by 2050. Key report findings include: 🔸11 of the 12 QSR companies have demonstrated evidence of at least one antibiotic policy in alignment with WHO guidelines. 🔸No company has or appears to be in the process of developing a policy fully aligned with WHO guidelines that applies to all its material #AnimalProteins. 🔸Improvements in disclosure have been observed amongst AP companies since the engagement was initiated in 2022. Despite this, disclosure generally remains insufficient to allow investors to gauge how effective the companies are in supporting responsible manufacturing and use of antibiotics in animal agriculture. The report recommends that in order to address the systemic risk posed by AMR, a One Health approach is required, with all stakeholders - including governments, investors, and companies - playing an active role in mitigating its underlying drivers. Awesome progress from our portfolio company Liberation Labs installing their second 150kL fermenter! Here's to the #future of #proteinmanufacturing ⚗
There’s nowhere to go but UP at our site in Richmond, Indiana! After installing our first #fermenter just a month ago, we have now installed a second; added major downstream processing tanks; and are nearing completion on the spray dryer building so we can finally install the large sections. In the photos below, you’ll see: Fermenters: Two of the four main fermenters have been placed, these are 150,000 liters and 55 ft tall. Dryer: We began framing the building about a month ago and are nearing completion. This is very complicated as the major equipment needs to be installed as part of the framing. The large cone will be turned upside down and placed into a large circle framed into the floor on the third level. Elevator: Erection of the elevator structure has begun, code requires it in a masonry structure, which is being constructed. We’ll post another batch of photos in the coming weeks – stay tuned!
