It is shocking to see rough sleeping rise by a fifth over 12 months in England, with 4,667 people recorded as sleeping on the streets on a single night in Autumn. This represents a near-record high and figures have risen for the third consecutive year. The number of people sleeping rough is now 91% higher than it was 3 years ago and over double the number than when data collation for rough sleeping began 15 years ago (via Crisis). New data has also revealed that over 160,000 children (a record high) are living in temporary accommodation, which is often precarious and unsuitable living conditions. A total of 126,040 households were recorded as living this way, a rise of over 15%. We implore the government to end rough sleeping through an “off the streets” approach, encompassing a housing first model. A lack of homes has led to a shocking number of people living in temporary accommodation, we are hopeful that 1.5million new homes over 5 years will help to tackle this awful issue. Everyone deserves a roof over their head, regardless of their circumstances. We look forward to the awaited publication of the cross-government strategy to end rough sleeping. https://lnkd.in/eU_SNhXx

The recent report from Channel 4 into the mistreatment of pregnant women in prisons was deeply disturbing. We are proud to join Level Up UK in calling on the Ministry of Justice to investigate inappropriate, illegal and degrading treatment during labour including remaining cuffed to an officer while giving birth. You can join the call as an individual or an organisation by following the link in the shared post below:
TAKE ACTION: Support the call for an investigation into illegal handcuffing during labour. Horrific accounts of women being cuffed to male officers during labour and antenatal examinations are emerging. One woman, who was cuffed for 48 hours, says “I feel like I was treated as less than an animal.” The women are calling for an independent investigation in what appears to be a widespread practice at HMP Bronzefield in Surrey, the largest women’s prison in Europe and the same prison where baby Aisha Cleary died in 2019. The Ministry of Justice has so far ignored the women’s requests – which is where the power of the Level Up community comes in. Will you write to the MOJ to demand a response? We’ve created a web tool that takes 1 minute to use. All you have to do is click the link below, sign your name and hit send! https://lnkd.in/de36W9me

Thanks to Trae from Cranstoun ROUTES for honouring black history month in America and Martin Luther King Day on 20th Jan Trae has shared a message in remembrance of how Dr Martin Luther King has influenced the civil liberties that we as individuals have today. We stress on the importance of being respectful of one another regardless of Race, Religion, Class, Sexuality or Gender. Such an important message to judge people based of the content of their character and not the colour of their skin.
