Leading the regeneration of Crystal Palace Park

About us

We're an independent, community-led charity. It’s your park, and with your support we can give it a vibrant and sustainable future. From 15 September 2023 we became Crystal Palace Park’s custodian, taking over this responsibility from the London Borough of Bromley. We are devoted to its long-term maintenance and improvement as a vibrant ecological, recreational and historic resource. • We're joining The National Lottery Heritage Fund in celebrating #HeritageTreasures! Today we're showcasing the wonderful 170-year-old Crystal Palace Dinosaurs. Our dinosaurs may not be considered accurate representations by modern-day standards, but they were a world-first attempt to communicate the emerging science of palaeontology to the Victorian public. Thanks to £5m funding from The National Lottery Heritage Fund, works will soon be starting to help preserve them for years to come. 🔗 Find out more: https://lnkd.in/eWmUTFHx

  • Great to see the newly-restored, Grade II* listed Crystal Palace Subway has been recognised in the Railway Heritage Trust Awards this week, with London Borough of Bromley and the Friends of Crystal Palace Subway winning the BAM Nuttall Partnership Award for their joint restoration of this stunning space. The awards are dedicated to encouraging and rewarding best practice in the re-use, restoration and continued upkeep of the heritage of railway and tramway buildings and structures. • Yesterday Historic England published its Heritage at Risk Register 2024, giving an annual snapshot of the health of England’s valued historic buildings and places. We’re delighted that Crystal Palace Subway has been listed as one of the buildings and sites across London making good progress. The Grade II* listed Crystal Palace Subway is beginning a new era following the first major stage of its restoration. A new roof and extensive repairs have breathed new life into the Victorian subway in time for its 160th anniversary in 2025. Historic England provided expert advice throughout the restoration, with London Borough of Bromley appointing architects Thomas Ford and Partners and conservation specialists DBR Limited to transform the space. The £3.5m project was funded through a number of sources, including the City of London Strategic Investment Pot, more than £1m from Historic England, and generous donations from numerous individuals. The repair and restoration project also benefited from significant local support spearheaded by the Friends of Crystal Palace Subway. We're thrilled to already be bringing the space back to life with pop-up cinema, comedy, a Christmas market and a silent disco coming up in the next few weeks. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/ePgA9qzr 📸 Mathias Falcone #heritage

  • As part of the planned park regeneration project, the Crystal Palace Dinosaurs will be getting a lot of attention from next year, with major conservation works planned. Conservators have been working this year to trial repair methods, so that when it comes to the major works the repairs will be as long-lasting and effective as possible. After careful cleaning of cracks on the Dinosaurs, the specialist team is testing a range of different materials and repair techniques and will be monitoring these over the coming months. 📸 Photos from a visit last week with Historic England, London Borough of Bromley, HTA Design LLP, SSHConservation, Donald Insall Associates, Alan Baxter Ltd #heritage #conservation

  • It’s #TrusteesWeek and we had to take the chance to celebrate and thank the Crystal Palace Park Trust’s wonderful Board of Trustees and Directors.   Each of our Trustees brings a wealth of experience and skills to keep the Trust running smoothly. But even more than that our Trustees are our Founders!   During the long lockdown summer of 2020, 10 individuals - all local residents and super fans of Crystal Palace Park – came together to work towards the shared goal of realising a new, community-led governance model for this much-loved park and historic landscape.   🔸12 months later they recruited the Trust’s first staff member and brought live music back to London’s original outdoor concert venue with two huge summer festivals (a white-knuckle ride in terms of planning around lock-downs…) 🔸Three years later they shepherded the charity through the take-over of the 200-acre site via a historic 125-year head-lease with the London Borough of Bromley. 🔸Five years later they are providing strategic guidance (and occasional hands-on advice!) to a staff team of 14 and standing on the cusp of co-delivering, in partnership with London Borough of Bromley, a £17.75m regeneration and restoration capital plan to restore the glory of this historic park.   Phew!   We hope our Trustees inspire you as much as they do us. People power and pulling together around a shared vision really can lead to change.   A huge thank you to each and every one of our Trustees, some of whom are pictured here celebrating, just after getting the ‘keys to the park’! 🔗 https://lnkd.in/ejH24YcD
