It’s the most wasteful time of the year, so instead of throwing all your food waste away, why not repurpose it into compost for your outdoor space or donate unused food? 🍗 Whilst uncooked fruit and vegetable scraps can be composted in a regular home compost bin, cooked foods from your Christmas spread can only be composted in a hot compost bin, or food waste digesters such as bokashi bins or wormeries ♻️ Alternatively, when the party’s over and some untouched Christmas pudding or mince pies are hanging around, bring them to a local food bank! Approximately six million Christmas trees are discarded annually in the UK, with many people unaware that real Christmas trees can be recycled into wood chipping mulch 🎄 Give your tree a second life this year and help your garden flourish! Shred your Christmas tree and use the chipping mulch to prevent soil erosion and frost damage over the colder months ♻ Alternatively, remove all decorations and bring your real, or artificial Christmas tree, to any of our Household Waste Recycling Centres! When it comes to cooking Christmas dinner and other festive treats, there is a simple way that you can help the environment and save yourself a few pennies too. 🍗 Pouring leftover fats down the sink can solidify in cold pipes, blocking up your drain and collectively form a ‘fatberg’ 😬. As cooking fats are non-biodegradable, this can eventually contribute to water pollution - not to mention a potential hefty plumbing bill come January. Each year, around 12,500 tonnes of Christmas decorations become waste, but you can reduce that number with some simple changes to how you dispose of your preloved Christmas decorations ♻️ 🎅 Repurpose old baubles into a fun table setting or make your own garland for a unique window display. 🎅 Why not switch out an artificial wreath for a real one? Or, even better, make your own using materials from your garden or outdoor spaces. This can then decompose naturally instead contributing to excessive Christmas waste. 🎅 Cut up your old tinsel for merry gift bag filling, or to stuff your stockings with! 🎅 Donate your decorations to charity shops or other family members who may make use of them. Whilst shiny and glittery wrapping paper floods the shelves this time of year, did you know that they are non-recyclable? Here are a few tips on recycling for wrapping paper; ✨ Wrapping papers containing glitter, metallic and glossy coatings are non-recyclable, making them better suited for household waste. 🎅 Consider opting for an eco-friendly alternative –they can still look just as good! Getting creative with gift wrapping can be a fun activity to help you get in the festive spirit. 🎁 Although brown paper can be recycled, sticky tape cannot! Make sure all your wrapping paper is tape-free before it heads to your recycling bin.
