The Hilary term began with mocks which were closely followed by the eagerly anticipated annual debate at the Oxford Union. Students had been honing their presentation and communication skills since the beginning of the course and nervously awaited the opportunity to put them into practice. 🌍✨ Excited to share our latest publication in Lancet Infectious diseases! We conducted a double-blind clinical trial in Uganda and Malawi, comparing two approaches to malaria prevention in children with sickle cell anaemia: 🔹 Weekly dihydroartemisinin–piperaquine 🔹 Monthly sulfadoxine–pyrimethamine Our findings: ✅ Weekly dihydroartemisinin–piperaquine significantly reduced clinical malaria cases compared to monthly sulfadoxine–pyrimethamine (8.8 vs. 43.7 cases per 100 person-years). ✅ Hospitalisations due to malaria and the need for blood transfusions were also much lower with dihydroartemisinin–piperaquine. ⚠️ However, sulfadoxine–pyrimethamine was linked to fewer non-malaria-related illnesses in older children not receiving penicillin prophylaxis. This work underscores the potential of dihydroartemisinin–piperaquine as a safer, more effective option in high malaria-resistance areas for children under 5. In our global fight against antimicrobial resistance, KWTRP is piloting a surveillance project where hospital samples are transfered to high-capacity laboratories for analysis, to inform patient treatment and policy planning. Mitigating AMR is crucial as it can be costly in lives, hospital stays and livelihoods. Lonnie Hackett, IHTM 2017, and Ignicious Bulongo are transforming healthcare of school-aged children in Zambia through Healthy Learners, a non-profit organization dedicated to integrating health into education. While global health efforts prioritize the first 1,000 days of life, investment often wanes after age five, leaving millions of children across sub-Saharan Africa vulnerable to treatable conditions like anemia and parasitic infections. This gap undermines children’s ability to stay healthy, succeed in school, and reach their potential. Healthy Learners bridges this divide by operating at the intersection of health and education. The program transforms schools into access points for healthcare, integrating services into daily routines to make treatment and referrals seamless. Find out more

Myanmar-Thailand: #Healthcare access without barriers - Coup and civil war worsening the #humanitarian crisis, a rising number of new #migrants cross the border daily. Shoklo Malaria Research Unit and M-Fund concentrate their efforts along the border area. Mahidol Oxford Tropical Medicine Research Unit MORU In Myanmar, the United Nations reports that 3 million people have been displaced due to the ongoing civil war. The 2021 coup intensified conflicts and worsened the humanitarian crisis, forcing at least a hundred thousand to seek refuge and medical care in Thailand. The Tak province, a key crossing point between the two countries, sees a rising number of new migrants (with 40% of women) crossing the border every day. In response to this health emergency caused by these large-scale forced displacements, the SMRU and M-FUND projects have concentrated their efforts along the border area. This documentary has been done thanks to L'Initiative, a French facility implemented by expertisefrance726, that complements The Global Fund. Vilada's project on "Evaluating the impact of a Lao language mobile phone antimicrobial use guideline application on antimicrobial prescribing in the Lao PDR" was supervised by Prof. Elizabeth Ashley (LOMWRU), Prof. Paul Newton (Oxford/Mahidol Oxford Tropical Medicine Research Unit [MORU]), Prof Paul Turner (Cambodia-Oxford Medical Research Unit [COMRU]), Prof H. Rogier van Doorn (Oxford University Clinical Research Unit) and Prof Mayfong Mayxay (LOMWRU). Vilada was examined by Prof Susanna Dunachie (Oxford-MORU; pic right) and Professor Nick Feasey (pic left). A very successful few days for our MORU and OUCRU DPhil family!

🦠 Just published: prevalence of AMR in the general community in #Vietnam Excited to share that the research I worked on at Oxford University Clinical Research Unit during my Msc IDOH thesis is (finally) published in the #Lancet Regional Health Western Pacific. Antimicrobial resistance (#AMR) is and remains a pressing public health issue and Vietnam is believed to be one of the hotspots for the spread and development of AMR. We found an alarming rate of 94% of Enterobacterales to be resistant to third-generation cephalosporins. Our findings further suggest that, in this high-prevalence setting, colonization is not associated with individual antibiotic use whereas environmental factors are. Alongside our study on AMR from fecal samples, we have also published our findings on the prevalence and risk factors of penicillin non-susceptible Streptococcus pneumoniae (PNSP).
