Business skills and networks for industry-engaged research
About us
Developing Business-Aware Academics is a four-year (2023-2027) £5m Research England project, based at the University of Exeter Business School and working in collaboration with the Chartered Association of Business Schools and a network of academic, business, policy and non-profit partners. Universities, industry and government have long identified a need for greater collaboration between academia and business to realise the full potential of the UK’s research and innovation talent. Although there are some excellent initiatives in place, significant barriers remain. We offer an evidence-led programme of training and networking to empower academic researchers, in the early stages of their careers, with the knowledge, skills and opportunities to engage beyond academia to address societal, economic and environmental challenges. Our approach is built around the following four complementary areas of activity: 1. Building an evidence base through research into existing provision and good practice across higher education and industry, and continually evaluating the impact and effectiveness of new initiatives. 2. Developing training in business skills, competencies and mindsets for doctoral and early-career researchers. 3. Delivering multi-disciplinary networking opportunities for researchers and industrial partners to break down barriers to effective collaborations. 4. Building a campaign to champion the advantages of enhanced research collaboration and mobility across academia, industry and beyond. For more information email DBAA@exeter.ac.uk.

Some fantastic conversations with colleagues from across the HE sector this morning as Vitae launched its new RDF 2025. It's been such a pleasure to be part of the working group steering the refresh of the framework for researcher development, and great to see it being shared with members today. Thank-you to Helen Hampson and team for inviting me to speak about how it can be used to support career development across sectors! I also outlined how our Developing Business-Aware Academics project is seeking to shift researcher mindsets and policy towards an environment that encourages more impactful research and career pathways. If you've not yet signed up to our mailing list please do - lots of opportunities coming up to access funding and contribute to our work: https://lnkd.in/etWvsSj2

“Creativity is the algorithm that machines can’t crack” - Steph Hamill FRSA Last week, two of our team - Kate Ellis and Rachel Bennett – attended Creative UK’s Cornwall & Devon summit showcasing and celebrating the amazing creative companies across the region. It was great to be part of the conversation about the importance of the creative industries. Some particular highlights for us were: 💡 The significance of creative work for the UK – the return on investment by the creative industries is so important. It is these industries that keep the lights on in the UK, adding value to everything they touch! To make sure this continues, creative companies need to make sure they’re retaining the talent and IP they produce within the UK 💡 Investing in the creative talent pipeline is absolutely vital to produce innovation, problem solving, and creative thinking. And these are skills that are relevant to every sector, especially at the intersections with other growth sectors! 💡 A huge part of pitching creative ideas to funders is storytelling. It is the most powerful storytellers that succeed, and so creatives need to make sure they can speak the language of other sectors. Flip the script: how does your story meet the need? A huge thank you to the team at Creative UK Cornwall and Creative UK Devon for putting together such an amazing event. We’re looking forward to attending the national summit in London next month!
We're hitting the ground running at University of Plymouth with our #BigSummit25 Investment in Devon & Cornwall! Kicking off with an opening dinner last night in Realideas historic Market Hall in Real Immersive’s 360° Immersive Dome ✨️ The Creative UK Cornwall & Creative UK Devon team have planned an amazing day today, starting with a panel discussion on driving #growth in the Creative Industries featuring Joanne Evans, Edward Tellwright, Professor Emma Hunt and our very own Lara Carmona 🥳 We're looking forward to joining Arts University Plymouth after lunch for more panel discussions, and to hear from some female founders. The Create Growth Programme wouldn’t be possible without Department for Culture, Media and Sport
