Ahead of International Women's Day, we spoke to CARE International UK and our own Amanda Smith, head of Community Impact, about their research in Tanzania that explored the impacts of climate change on women smallholder farmers. In the rural areas of the country, 98% of women engage in agriculture as an economic activity - but many lack the right skills and resources to mitigate against climate change. Leadership training, farming skills and climate-smart practices were provided, strengthening supply chains and improving community income and resilience.
CARE International UK and Diageo are working together to remove the barriers women face in their communities to farm better, access the market and take part in decision-making spaces. This #InternationalWomensDay, we are highlighting the impact of our partnership on smallholder farmers’ lives in Tanzania. Last year, in the Singida region of Tanzania, a pilot programme by Sightsavers, the Syngenta Foundation and CARE Tanzania with Serengeti Breweries - part of Diageo's operations in Africa - supported sorghum smallholder farmers to challenge harmful social norms and improve their linkages to the commercial sorghum supply chain. The programme had a particular focus on women farmers and farmers with disabilities. 📽️ Watch the video to see the impact of this work.
