Interesting to note, returning to this group for the second year, how much has happened in the world of remote monitoring and virtual wards since speaking to the last cohort a year ago. Inspiring to see the difference this tech is making across the globe with great examples of marked impact in Bristol, Denmark and Saudi Arabia
It was great to return to the Rotman Global Health MBA UK Gemba hosted by the Imperial College Business School last week. The participants are mainly senior leaders from Canadian health systems, the majority experienced clinicians with a sprinkling of health tech sector leaders. I was talking about the potential for a pivot towards digital home care to make a fundamental change to healthcare systems globally and we had a terrific and very lively conversation about this. We covered new ways to provide personalised, proactive care and the roles of coaches and social prescribers in supporting behaviour change and habit building, complementing the work of clinicians, and helping patients become in control of their health and any conditions they are living with. Hopefully some appetites have been whet for change away from a hospital dependent model, I look forward to hearing more about this! Last year, France became the first European country to reimburse remote monitoring for all eligible patients Tara Donnelly, Founder of Digital Care, explores the country’s nation-wide objective to tackle the capacity issue in healthcare by introducing government reimbursement of remote monitoring technology expenses. “Once authorised products start to be announced, and healthcare organisations start accessing them for their patients, we will begin to see the impact of the programme in terms of scale.” We know it is what people want - The Health Foundation’s public survey last year found that 78% of people would be happy to use tech to monitor their health at home rather than in hospital, and for those aged 65 and above that rose to 85%. “Inspired by what our French neighbours are doing, it would be great to give the public what they are asking for, loud and clear,” says Donnelly, on the change we all want to see, not just in healthcare, but across the care system too. https://lnkd.in/dW6Wdd7K #independentliving #remotemonitoring #eldercare #healthtech #healthcare

It’s been quite the week for Virtual Wards! The latest is this very important move - cementing tech enabled VWs as central to recovery and augmenting their role in the urgent care pathway and to help recover flow. We rarely give brilliant policy the shout out it deserves but this is most definitely an example of that; harnessing peoples’ desire to spend more time at home and less in hospital, supported by great, yet simple, tech. And lining up incentives to ensure there is practical support too, to develop an NHS that is ready for the modern age - both responsive and future proofed.
