🌍🌐 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗶𝘀 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗘 𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝗜 𝗯𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗸𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗲𝗻𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝗰𝗮𝗽𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀? 🤖 Our new explainer article describes the diverse range of AI activities carried out by ECMWF and its many partner organisations in the EU Destination Earth (#DestinE) initiative led by the European Commission's DG CNECT. It also helps understand how the EuroHPC supercomputers and DestinE’s digital twins and #DigitalTwinEngine, which ECMWF and its partners are implementing, create an excellent environment to unlock a new generation of AI solutions for weather and climate. These AI activities carried out in DestinE will support the quantification of uncertainties for the #DigitalTwins simulations and enhance the interactivity features of the DestinE system. They build on recent breakthroughs in artificial intelligence and machine learning in weather and climate, and specifically on the developments by ECMWF and its Member States in the context of ECMWF’s AIFS and Anemoi frameworks. Some of the key objectives are to: 💻 Develop machine learning-based Earth system model components to advance towards an AI-driven Earth system model, by harnessing the power of EuroHPC supercomputers and the digital twins’ data. 🔧 Expand the software solutions of the Digital Twin Engine to support training and running a new generation of AI models and to enhance the interactivity of the DestinE system.    📜 Support the establishment of guidelines for the ethical and responsible use of AI in Europe. Overall, the combination of advanced AI, the digital twin technology pioneered in DestinE, and the world-class supercomputing facilities of EuroHPC will contribute to enhancing disaster resilience, supporting climate adaptation, and developing next-generation AI solutions in Europe. January 2025 was the 18th month in a 19-month period in which the global-average temperature was more than 1.5°C above pre-industrial level. With the emergence of La Niña conditions in the eastern equatorial Pacific, one would have expected January 2025 to be somewhat cooler than January 2024, when the El Niño event was nearing its peak intensity. But the shift from neutral ENSO conditions to La Niña has been happening slowly, delaying the cooling effect expected from La Niña. What’s more, this currently small cooling effect has been more than offset by large warm anomalies outside the tropical Pacific. By combining advanced machine learning techniques with high-performance computing, the WeatherGenerator will deliver more accurate, cost-effective simulations of Earth system dynamics. This is critical for informed decision-making across various sectors, including public health, disaster management, and environmental sustainability, helping to mitigate extreme events such as floods 🌊 and heatwaves 🌞. Key Objectives: 🌍 Develop a cutting-edge AI model for simulating Earth system dynamics 📅 Improve weather and climate predictions across timescales 🔬 Deepen our understanding of climate processes and their interactions ⚠️ Support disaster response efforts by providing better forecasts of extreme events 🌐 Promote open-source collaboration in climate research 🎓 Train future AI experts specialized in Earth sciences Coordinated by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts - ECMWF, this collaborative effort involves 16 leading European institutions, including renowned research centers, meteorological institutes, and energy organizations. What a great way to end the 17th European Space Conference!    This afternoon, we signed contribution agreements on the Africa-EU Space Partnership Programme with African Space Agency European Space Agency - ESA EUMETSAT and European Commission    This action reinforces our commitment to the World Meteorological Organization's #EarlyWarnings4All initiative.    We are looking forward to implementing this action and to putting our many years of experience in providing and co-designing EO-based weather and climate data products and services to these strategic stakeholders.
