We’re really excited to say that a write-up of our recent collaboration with students from Action for Children’s hospitality program has been featured in The Scotsman. It was an event worth celebrating. As our head Kirsty Haigh said, ‘These young people didn’t just create a meal; they created joy, community, and a lasting memory in the true spirit of Christmas.’ https://lnkd.in/esNYYmqP

Social enterprise making good, local food available to everyone in Scotland through cookery classes and event catering
About us
Edinburgh Food Social is a social enterprise working towards food justice by educating and empowering young people and communities to engage with local, seasonal food. Inspired by our outstanding Scottish food culture, we promote the use of local, seasonal produce to increase access to and understanding of good food and its transformational impact on physical and mental health. Our food projects work with communities and young people in Craigmillar and the surrounding areas to develop confidence in the kitchen and enhance people’s lives through learning about food. Our work gives local people the skills and resources to provide for themselves and their families, and inspires young people to build rewarding careers in hospitality. We provide food education, interactive learning opportunities and community meals. Our community food projects are supported by event catering.

Last week, we welcomed some brilliant students from Action for Children's hospitality program for three days of hands-on cooking lessons. These three days culminated in the young people cooking a Christmas meal for the Pensioners' Club at Sandy's Community Centre, Craigmillar. The event was a huge success with one guest saying, 'The kids should be dead proud. It was a cracking Christmas dinner.' We couldn't agree more. #christmas #community #cookingclass #Edinburgh

As a social enterprise that supports people experiencing food insecurity, we were very saddened to learn that the Scottish Government has decided not to introduce the Human Rights Bill, meaning that the ‘right to food’ will not be enshrined in Scottish law. Today, we protested this decision outside the Scottish parliament building, attending Nourish Scotland's Human Rights Day of Action. It was great to see people who are passionate about this cause making their voice heard. #BringBackTheBill #OurRightsOurFuture

Over the past couple of weeks, six student-volunteers from Castlebrae Community Campus worked tirelessly, preparing food for the school’s annual Christmas concert. The night was a roaring success, not least because of the food. As head teacher Norma Prentice said, ‘These kids love doing this, and you can see that in the food they make.’ Read more: https://lnkd.in/eGSN6HtM #foodeducation #cooking #community #edinburgh

We recently had the pleasure of taking some young people on a trip to The Free Company, a farm, seasonal restaurant, and place of learning that practices regenerative agriculture. 🥬 This trip proved to be more than a fun day out; it was a hands-on lesson in environmental responsibility, hard work, and community. A huge thank you to The Free Company for giving us such an enriching experience. #regenerativeagriculture #edinburgh #sustainablefood
