How do you create an academic community for post-grad research students and staff? Using Student Partnership Agreement plus School funding, Rea Evangelia Michalopoulou along with Maria Jernslett and Ingrid Obsuth set out to organise events in University of Edinburgh - School of Health in Social Science, including a ceilidh and pub quiz, which were open to staff and PGR students. "The motivation behind this event stemmed from concerns voiced by the PGRs who have felt a disconnect from the staff. Whether it was the physical separation of floors, or the natural barriers created by academic roles, the need for a more cohesive community was clear." Rea goes on to share key challenges and solutions that may arise when organising an academic community-building event: 1. Creating a comfortable space to eradicate hierarchical distance; 2. Inclusivity is key; 3. Engagement starts early; 4. Advertise, advertise, advertise and then some more!; 5. Feedback is crucial. Read more in the link in comments below!
