The search for a synthesis method to create longer ZnO NWAs with high-quality vertical alignment, and the investigation of their electrical properties, have become increasingly important. A new study used a hydrothermal method for growing vertically aligned arrays of ZnO nanowires (NWs) using localized heating to grow nanowires of unprecedented length. These are the latest published results from the European metrology project 'nanowires'. The project is now complete, but publications and new insights into the design and use of nanowires for energy harvesting applications are being made, and we are really excited to present these latest data. These NW structures have multiple applications, e.g., in piezotronic strain sensors, gas sensing, and piezoelectric energy harvesting. The new tool developed during the European Nanowires energy harvesting research project will revolutionize quality control for nanomaterials in renewable energy generation. This innovative instrument allows for the accurate measurement of tiny charges provided by nanoscale energy harvesting devices, particularly piezoelectric materials that generate electrical charges when flexed or vibrated. Partners in the project dedicated time to fabricate individual nanowires, creating 'forests of nanowires' to evaluate the electrical response of sub-100 nm diameter wires. Our specific contribution involved measuring device output rather than individual nanowire responses. We introduced a unique method for this purpose and successfully developed a prototype instrument, with elements of the tool now patent-protected. Excitingly, our efforts have resulted in a successful patent pending status for the tool, ensuring its protection and potential for future innovations in the field. Our ESPY33 tool used in EU Nanowires project! https://lnkd.in/epzkTqpA Piezoelectric energy harvesting is a renewable-energy-harvesting technology that refers to the capturing of energy from mechanical vibration and converting it into electrical energy to power nano- and micro-scale devices that do not have access to an external power supply. In work recently published, we present traceable measurements of the piezoelectric response of pattterned devices, taken at the nanoscale by our EU partners and at the device-macroscale by Electrosciences new ESPY33 instrument.
