It was good to hear from industry professionals at last weeks TIP Live conference, where there was good support from all parties for the role of the Design Champion for major projects that is being developed by the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) and Birdi & Partners for the National Infrastructure Commission and Infrastructure and Projects Authority (IPA).The session comprised of presentations by myself and Judith Sykes FREng of Expedition Engineering Ltd followed by a Q&A with Steve Roberts - CEng, FICE, MCIHT, MAPM , Design Champion for Lower Thames Crossing and Karen Barclay, DCO Director for Anglian Water Services. What was evident was that the industry needed individuals that have the skills, responsibility and are accountable for shaping the success of major projects from establishing good briefs and procurement strategies to evaluating projects post completion and sharing lessons learnt. With the need to deliver 'more for less' in the UK infrastructure sector, there has never been a more critical time to ensure that an environment is created at the projects outset, to discuss how good design judgement can result in improved outcomes in all aspects of major project delivery.

Retaining and upgrading existing buildings not only supports ESG goals but also minimises embodied carbon, an urgent priority as the industry addresses net-zero targets. Our work with Needspace? on the Clapham North Arts Centre is a concept design that embraces circular economy principles. By proposing to deeply retrofit the constrained site, we maximised building retention while increasing the development area by 35%. This phased approach to achieving an EPC B rating demonstrates how commercial projects can balance sustainability, functionality, and growth. Circular economy principles were key throughout our review, prioritising reuse and avoiding unnecessary demolition, showing how regeneration can preserve resources while reducing waste. We are pleased to share our introductory guidance note for #PAS2080 for #Bridges. The note builds upon existing guidance (that we have highlighted in previous posts). It draws out the primary intentions of PAS2080 and provides a #carbon reduction hierarchy specific to #bridge projects that is aligned with holistic guidance provided in the specification.
