🍼 Postpartum depression discovery opens door to blood test and earlier treatment New research could lead to a blood test to identify women at risk of postpartum depression, and possibly even to a preventive treatment. The research suggests that pregnant women may have characteristic levels of certain molecules in their blood that can warn that they are at risk of developing postpartum depression (PPD).These molecules, called neuroactive steroids, are derived from progesterone, a hormone that plays critical roles in pregnancy and menstruation. Measuring those molecules via a simple blood test could let doctors get women treatment for PPD sooner – possibly even before symptoms appear, the researchers said. Jennifer Payne, MD an expert in reproductive psychiatry at UVA Health and the University of Virginia School of Medicine, said: “Studying postpartum depression gives us a way to identify biological changes that occur before someone becomes depressed because the timing of postpartum depression is predictable.” Read more: https://lnkd.in/e3X3bDPe

🫀 The heart health gap: why women are 'under-treated' and 'overlooked' in cardiovascular care In September 2024, several world-leading experts writing in the BMJ warned that even though heart disease remains the biggest killer of women under 50, they continue to be 'under-diagnosed, under-treated and under-represented in cardiovascular research'. Lack of awareness and education, as well as structural and financial barriers are all factors preventing women from accessing care. But even when women are armed with the right information and have access to services, they often struggle to be taken seriously. During the American Heart Association's American Heart Month, Femtech World spoke to Harvard-trained cardiologist and CEO of Systole Health, Dr Simin Gharib Lee, about the challenges women face in accessing appropriate cardiovascular care. 💬 Lee says: “[Women] get fewer diagnostic tests, fewer interventions and less aggressive medical therapy. These gaps aren’t just a failure in awareness—they’re a failure in how we train, diagnose, and treat cardiovascular disease in women.” Link to full interview in comments.

🇦🇺 Australia steps up women’s health focus in landmark move The Australian government says it is stepping up its support for women’s health with a near-£300m funding boost. A new package of measures, worth £290m (AUS$573m), has been drawn up deliver “more choice, lower costs and better health care for women”. It includes the first Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) listing for new oral contraceptive pills in more than 30 years, saving a reported 50,000 women hundreds of dollars a year. Other measures include more robust financial support for birth control implants and for menopausal care; and the opening of endometriosis and pelvic pain clinics. This five-year investment by Australia’s Albanese Labor Government has been informed by consultation with healthcare providers, advocacy groups and the National Women’s Health Advisory Council. Minister Katy Gallagher said: “Women have asked government to take their healthcare seriously, and we have listened. Our investment of more than half a billion dollars will deliver more choice, lower costs, and better healthcare for women at all stages of their lives." Read more: https://lnkd.in/ekbrwS77

💡 Hinge charts pelvic pain breakthrough in latest trial A women’s health intervention that harnesses software, AI and wearables to address pelvic pain, as well as depression, has shown promising results. Hinge Health’s digital ‘Women’s Pelvic Health Programme’ has reported a 44% reduction in pelvic pain after four weeks of use – and 53% after 12 weeks. The probability of the intervention group screening for moderate to severe depression was significantly lower by 11% compared to the control group. Bijal Toprani, PT, DPT, pelvic health physical therapist at Hinge Health and co-author of the study, said: “Although women’s pelvic pain is incredibly common, it remains undertreated and as a result, many women are going about their lives suffering in silence. “This study builds on validated research supporting the efficacy of Hinge Health’s Women’s Pelvic Health program to make a tangible impact for women and improve their quality of life.” Read more: https://lnkd.in/e32S4Esh
