From Nets to Shades: A Closer Look 👓🌊 Recycled doesn’t mean compromised. This close-up of our material, crafted from end-of-life fishing nets, shows just how high-quality sustainable innovation can be. 🌟 Did you know? Recycled nylon is just as durable and versatile as virgin nylon, but it reduces ocean waste and lowers the carbon footprint. Sunglasses like these don’t just look good—they do good. 😎 We’re proud to work with our ongoing partner, 30 South Ocean Positive Eyewear, who use our recycled materials to create a range of products. We recycle fishing nets into materials for 3D printing and beyond
About us
Fishy Filaments recycles used fishing nets into materials for 3D printing/Additive Manufacturing using a proprietary technology that can operate at a harbour-side scale. That Patent Pending recycling technology has application in fisheries around the world, an industry that employs nearly 40 million people and feeds billions. In 3D printing our first product, Porthcurno, is made of 100% recycled nylon sourced from the MSC Certified Cornish Hake fishery based in Newlyn, Cornwall. It saves 97-98% of CO2-eq emissions vs virgin equivalent nylons. Our second product line, 0rCA®, is a blend of our recycled Marine Nylon® with 100% recycled carbon fibre and is aimed at engineering applications in 3D printing and beyond. We estimate that it saves 94-95% CO2-eq emissions vs virgin equivalents at directly comparable performance and price. Our material has also been used in injection moulding and is being developed for use in SLS-type additive manufacturing, but our ultimate focus remains on harbourside recycling technology for highly localised manufacturing, de-risking both upstream (fisheries) and downstream (industry) supply chains. Our work is underlain by two company/process specific Life Cycle Assessments that establish the carbon impacts of our processes and technologies.

Co-located petrochemical plants are also at risk (previously shared analysis) adding to the known freshwater flood risks of these significant pieces of plastic production infrastructure. Maybe it’s why major plastics players are looking at our distributed nylon recycling infrastructure, to offset that risk ? #resilience #insurance #liability #disruption

At the start of the new year, imagine something bold: A world without waste 🌍🤯 This isn’t just a dream - it’s a real possibility. 👉 Thermoplastics like PA-6 with carbon fibers can be reused multiple times without losing their mechanical properties. This has been proven by Martin Kausch and the amazing team at Fraunhofer IWU. Their SEAM technology for additive manufacturing is based on granules, which greatly simplifies the processing of recycled material. 💡 When integrated into our machines, the SEAM extruder can realize its full potential for industrial use, achieving incredible output rates of up to 10 kg/h. This isn’t just about reducing waste; it’s about transforming how industries think about materials: Making them investments that last rather than resources to discard. What steps toward circular economy can you envision in your industry?

We were recently honoured to present Fishy Filaments to a major international conference in South Korea, immediately in advance of the two other international conferences on Plastic Pollution and Overseas Aid. Our founder spoke in the session on Fishing Community Business Transformation and Emerging Opportunities to introduce 1500 delegates from over 30 countries to a small start-up from the UK and what we have done to transform community-scale access to high quality recycling of end-of-life monofilament nets. #recycling #development #plastic #pollution #inc5 #unfao #icfc2024 #community

#icfc2024 International Conference On Fishing Communities closing video This was the second edition of this conference and as a senior delegate from Niarobi mentioned to me as we left, it felt important. With only 1500 delegates from 34 nations and over 4 days, it was tiny when compared with the UN Plastic Pollution Treaty negotiations up the road, but it was all about community scale actions and impacts in global fishing communities. With multiple attendences from Korean ministers, their deputies and their marine technology agency, the JMI, there was no doubt how seriously the hosts were taking both their own challenges and their wider leadership role. It was breakfast with ministers of small island island states (SIDS) and coffee with The World Bank and UN FAO, with not a lobbyist in sight. Insight into why Ecuador needs help after being hit by 60+ storms in recent years or how AI-driven drones are helping the safer harvest of octopus in muddy estuaries or why the Korean UNESCO-recognised Haenyeo fisher women are taking to social media. It was diverse. It was colourful. It was challenging at times. But it was worth the jet lag. Many thanks to the Korean Ministry of Ocean and Fisheries for the invitation to speak and to be part of the wider event.
