In our NEW blog post, Ian, our Field Manager in the Yorkshire & North East team, talks about his 43 years in forestry, what inspired him to join the sector and why it’s been such a rewarding experience. "I’ve made many life-long friends along the way" says Ian. "I feel great knowing I am making a difference, whether it’s helping to future-proof our woodlands and forests against climate change or planting trees and creating amazing outdoor spaces for the next generation to enjoy. It’s something I am incredibly passionate and proud of." Read more: https://lnkd.in/eNHvfWu2 #ForestryCareers

Providing expertise and support in order to protect, improve and expand England's woodlands.
About us
What do we do? We provide grants, licences and advice to private woodland owners to encourage new tree planting and to help keep private forests under sustainable management. Our plant health officers inspect wood imports at ports to minimise the risk from foreign pests and diseases. Our experts work with local authorities and landowners to contain and control any spread. We licence tree felling to protect our woodlands for generations to come.

These are exciting developments for #TreeHealth. Great job Ivor and all involved 👏.
🌳🐕🦺 In a UK-first, we've partnered with Luke Jones at the CAPE (Canine Assisted Pest Eradication) team, to train an extraordinary detection dog, Ivor, to sniff out the destructive tree pathogen Phytophthora ramorum. 🧪 During trials, six-year-old Ivor (a cocker spaniel x labrador) achieved an impressive 89% detection rate on first attempts—proving the immense potential of detection dogs in safeguarding our woodlands. 🗨️ Dr. Heather Dun, Pathologist at Forest Research shared: "The results have been incredibly encouraging. Detection dogs like Ivor represent an exciting new tool in the fight against pests and diseases, helping to protect our nation’s trees through enhanced biosecurity." This pathogen poses a serious threat, causing significant damage to over 150 plant species, including larch—one of our vital timber trees. Thanks to Ivor, we're one step closer to a healthier, more resilient future for our forests. 🌱🐾 👉 Learn more about this ground-breaking work: https://ow.ly/pZsP50UiOug Forestry Commission Forestry England #DetectionDogs #TreeHealth #Biosecurity #ForestResearch “”

A new Tree Planting Taskforce has been launched today by Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs to oversee the planting of millions of trees across the UK. The Taskforce, chaired by the forestry ministers from the four nations, brings together representatives from key arm’s-length bodies and delivery partners from across the UK. "There has never been a more crucial time to take action to increase and improve the number of trees, woods and forests growing across the UK for future years" says our Chair, Richard Stanford. "It is vital that our four nations unite and work in partnership on this mission." Read more: https://lnkd.in/e2QRmTTV #NationalTreeWeek Image: Dale Sutherland-Roberts

It's good to see the 3rd season of planting underway at Hole Farm near Brentwood. 70,000+ trees will be planted this winter as Forestry England & National Highways continue their work to create a new community woodland. 👏 It will be predominantly a native mixed broadleaf woodland planted mainly with oak, along with species such as cherry, hornbeam, hazel, willow and poplar. The result will be a space for both people and nature, with paths and visitor facilities to help people access and enjoy the site, along with trees, meadows and ponds to benefit wildlife. Read our NEW blog for #NationalTreeWeek. As we continue to celebrate the start of tree planting season, Woodland Ambassador and Head Forester at Zetland Estates, Shaun, explains more about their planting scheme at Silver Hill in North Yorkshire. They are looking to produce good quality timber from the majority of the area planted, and are also generating carbon credits. The Forestry Commission helped fund the project through the Woodland Carbon Fund. Watch below for a short tour of the site and read the blog for more details: https://lnkd.in/eXmBz9nS
