  • Celebrating a successful six-week sprint 🏃 Last week, we attended the presentations from the Sprint teams at Sellafield Ltd’s Engineering Centre of Excellence. This event marked the culmination of their six-week sprint, which achieved exceptional results. One of these talented teams began their journey with us weeks ago during the initial research phase. Their return visit centred on trialling a concept design tailored to address a specific problem statement provided by Sellafield. Guided by the expertise of Scott Telford from the Forth team, the group rigorously evaluated their concept against predefined success criteria. The outcome not only met expectations, but it also exceeded them, requiring only minimal refinements for real-world application. This impressive achievement highlights the solution’s potential to drive meaningful progress in the nuclear industry. Visitors to the presentations were very impressed, including attendees from Sellafield, who expressed their high praise for those involved. Through the support of Forth’s advanced facilities and expertise, we’re proud to play a vital role in advancing Sellafield’s Decommissioning Strategy as part of Resolve Engineered Solutions. Collaborating with such a skilled and innovative team has been a rewarding experience, and we look forward to seeing the continued impact of this work. #ResolveEngineeredSolutions #NuclearIndustry #Engineering #Innovation #Development

  • Think you can’t weld safely underwater? Think again. As part of our 25th Anniversary Innovation Series, we're looking back on RESURGAM, a groundbreaking project that has the potential to revolutionise the way maritime repairs are carried out. This project saw the development of friction stir welding (FSW) tech that can be used underwater. In collaboration with a European consortium of 12 leading organisations from Belgium, The Netherlands, Ireland, Turkey, Spain, France, Poland, and the UK, we developed FSW technology powered by artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics to enable ship repairs directly in the water. Why it matters: Traditional ship repairs often require expensive and time-consuming dry dock facilities, some ships have to travel great distances for these repairs, ultimately raising their carbon footprint. Underwater welding requires great skill and teams of divers at risk in rough seas, but FSW technology changes the game by allowing repairs to take place underwater, reducing costs, saving time, and improving safety for shipyards globally. The Impact of RESURGAM: -Delivered the world’s first demonstrations of underwater FSW technology. -Tackled challenges faced by smaller European shipyards. -Highlighted the power of international collaboration in innovation. -This technology represents a significant leap forward in maritime engineering, and we are proud to have been a part of its development. Stay tuned as we continue to celebrate 25 years of innovation.
