💼 𝐉𝐨𝐛 𝐒𝐞𝐞𝐤𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐃𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐞 𝐁𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫! 💼 Our CCO and LinkedIn Top Voice, Andrew MacAskill, shares candidates’ stories of being rejected due to untrained leaders and unchecked biases. Have a read of his full post below 👇
CCO at Fraser Dove International | Private Equity and Life Sciences Executive Search | Speaker | Bestselling Author | On a Mission to Enhance Life Sciences Through Talent
Yesterday I opened a can of worms by sharing the dumbest reasons I have heard for rejecting candidates. Some thought I was exaggerating for clickbait and engagement. But then 100's of people started sharing their own experiences...... Here are some of the ridiculous reasons they shared for why candidates had been rejected: "I had “Doesn’t support a football team” once" “Was looking out of the window when answering” - when all they were doing was thinking "An Executive Chairman of a building materials supplier once rejected a candidate because they had a dodgy eye." "Rejected a seemingly excellent candidate because they brought their own water to the interview” "I was once rejected for being unmarried at 33." "A friend of mine recently got declined as she was “too enthusiastic”" "I got rejected at final stage for a hybrid role because I've been remote for the last 5 years" "He was too early" to the interview so rejected. "A man was rejected after an interview in my old company for having an ear piercing! Apparently meant he was going to be argumentative and strong willed!" "I actually had "someone" take issue that the candidate's email address was @Aol.com!" "I was rejected once for being Australian, straight after they said Aussies are great hard workers!" "He's too overweight, clearly doesn't look after himself how's he going to look after our business?" So while some hiring companies are great many still have untrained leaders relying on their legendary "gut instinct" and leaning into bias. We need to do better, push back as suppliers and also encourage interview training at every level in every organisation. If these are the rejection reasons people are brazenly verbalizing, imagine some of the other reasons that are never spoken.

👇 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐬𝐞 𝐀𝐫𝐞 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐓𝐨𝐩 𝟓 𝐍𝐞𝐰𝐬 𝐒𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐀𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 𝐁𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐤𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐬 𝐘𝐨𝐮 𝐍𝐞𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐝 𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐖𝐞𝐞𝐤 👇 1️⃣ Developments shared at the 2024 American Society of Hematology (ASH) conference. Key announcements include Sanofi's rilzabrutinib for immune thrombocytopenia (ITP), Novo Nordisk's etavopivat for sickle cell disease, and updates on Beam Therapeutics’ CRISPR-based BEAM-101 therapy for sickle cell disease. Additional research highlights include fertility preservation for sickle cell patients undergoing treatment. 📰 https://lnkd.in/eY49W5MJ 2️⃣ Recent research has demonstrated that administering the cytokine RANKL (Receptor Activator of Nuclear Factor κ B Ligand) to aged mice rejuvenates thymic function, leading to improved T-cell production and a consequent reduction in tumour growth. This finding suggests potential therapeutic avenues for enhancing immune function in the elderly. 📰 https://lnkd.in/ebxX8pyh 3️⃣ The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has granted accelerated approval to Kebilidi (eladocagene exuparvovec-tneq), marking the first gene therapy in the United States administered directly into the brain. Developed by PTC Therapeutics, Kebilidi is designed to treat aromatic L-amino acid decarboxylase (AADC) deficiency, a rare genetic disorder that impairs neurotransmitter production, leading to severe developmental and neurological challenges. 📰 https://lnkd.in/eCKpwcX9 4️⃣ Researchers at the University of Cambridge have developed an MRI-based imaging technique, hyperpolarised carbon-13 imaging, which significantly enhances the detection of metabolic activity in ovarian cancer tumours. This advancement enables rapid differentiation between tumour subtypes and assessment of their responsiveness to treatments, potentially allowing oncologists to personalise therapies more effectively. 📰 https://lnkd.in/ecwinDWN 5️⃣ Researchers from the University of Nottingham and the Quadram Institute have utilised magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to investigate how a gluten-free diet affects individuals with coeliac disease. The study, published in Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology, reveals that while a gluten-free diet alleviates certain symptoms, it also alters gut microbiota, potentially leading to new treatment approaches. 📰 https://lnkd.in/epbSKCUw #ResearchBreakthroughs | #LifeSciences | #NewsRoundUp

𝐋𝐢𝐟𝐭 𝐔𝐩: 𝐅𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐀𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐀𝐝𝐯𝐨𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐬, 𝐀 𝐔𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐏𝐚𝐭𝐡 𝐭𝐨 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬 It is almost 10 years since McKinsey began its annual Women in the Workplace study, and yet women’s growth in executive roles has remained largely stagnant. The Life Science Industry has always struggled to attract and retain women. The more senior you go in most businesses, the less women you see. That is why we created the Lift Up: Women in Life Sciences community to champion, inspire, and connect women across Life Sciences from the bench to the boardroom. Join our special guest host and LinkedIn Top Voice, Andrew MacAskill, for an awe-inspiring event where we are raising the question: What role can men play in all of this? Andrew will be joined by Richard Saynor (Chief Executive Officer at Sandoz), Daniel Griesser (VP HR Country Head Germany at GSK) and Dr. Andreas Raabe (Chief Executive Officer at Adragos Pharma) who all believe men have a vital role in championing, promoting and advocating women in the workplace. Our panel of executives all hold a proven track record of creating diverse leadership teams that drive high performance. What better way to investigate this topic by tapping into their expertise? 𝐃𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐛𝐫𝐨𝐚𝐝𝐜𝐚𝐬𝐭 𝐰𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐮𝐬𝐬: 👉 Creating a culture whereby the best candidates get the right leadership roles 👉 Does women’s progression result in the opposite for men? 👉 The fear of entering the DEI space and saying the wrong things. 👉 How diverse workforces create innovation and a competitive advantage. So, whether you’re a woman looking to progress your career or a male ally for women in life sciences, please join us and have your say. The event will include a live Q&A, giving you the chance to engage directly with our experts! #LiftUp | #MaleAlly | #FraserDove
