AI research accelerator developing tools to help solve some of the biggest challenges facing space science & humanity.

About us

The Frontier Development Lab (FDL) applies artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) technologies to space science, pushing the frontiers of research and developing new tools to help solve some of the biggest challenges that humanity faces. These range from the affects of climate change to predicting space weather, from improving disaster response, to identifying meteorites that could hold the key to the history of our universe. FDL is a public-private partnership with ESA in Europe and NASA in the USA. We work with commercial partners such as NVIDIA, Intel, and Google Cloud who provide expertise and the computing resources necessary for rapid experimentation and iteration in data intensive areas, as well as partners such as the Satellite Applications Catapult, SETI, and the University of Oxford.

  • The Wormhole live: Warp speed edition Join us for a special holiday edition of The Wormhole, for a delightful conversation with NASA SHEliophysicist Madhulika Guhathakurta, UCLA Professor of Space Physics Marco Velli, and Star Trek Executive Producer and Guardian of the Star Trek Legacy, as we celebrate the Parker Solar Probe’s perihelion—the point in the orbit of the spacecraft which it is closest to the sun. In 2018, this engineering marvel broke the record of being the closest a human-made object has ever been to to the sun, at 26.55 million miles—a record previously set in 1976 by the Helios 2 spacecraft, which got within 27 million miles of the sun. The Parker Solar Probe will be much closer and will be traveling at 430,000 mph at perihelion, also making it the "fastest human-made object in history.” ☀️ The Parker Solar Probe will “touch” the Sun on Christmas Eve, December 24th, and we want to celebrate this historic event with you. From this moment on, whenever you look at that Christmas Star/Sun of the top of your Christmas Tree, you will remember where you were when this exciting moment happened. 🎄 In addition to discussing the historic significance of this mission and the science discoveries it is enabling, we’ll talk about what it means to travel at such an incredible speed. Is it faster than Santa’s sleigh? Let’s find out together! 🎅 And, as any fan of Star Trek knows, if you can get going fast enough, using the Sun as a slingshot, you can travel through time. Just how fast is the probe traveling as measured in impulse or warp speed? Where in time will it end up? We’ll also discuss just what the fate of this probe will be as its NASA mission comes to a close. 🖖 Join NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration and European Space Agency - ESA Frontier Development Lab Exploration Director, Jonathan Knowles and our special guests for this inspirational conversation that is certain to be informative and very fun. 🤠 We sincerely hope you will drop in for the celebration and enjoy some holiday cheer with us. 🎁 May your holiday be as radiant as the Sun’s corona and your joy as warm as as the Sun’s surface. 🌞 What: The Wormhole - Warp Speed Edition Date: Sunday 22 January, 2024 Time: 12 Noon New York, 5.00 pm London, 9.00 am San Francisco Where: http://thewormhole.live/ Trillium Technologies #space #science #AI #exploration
