Last week we held our final PROTO Tech Lab on Augmented Reality & 3D modelling with Nicholas Delap at the Stockport War Memorial Gallery. We also visited Cast, Doncaster, Barnsley Civic - Barnsley Civic Enterprise LTD, The Turnpike Gallery, where Nick carefully guided participants in using Z-Brush to create bewildering creations based on nature, brought to life using Spark Studio where participants could walk around their virtual creations. Big thanks to both of our facilitators, Nicholas Delap and Dr Lucie Lee Sykes for all their hard work, and to every participant that gave their creativity to the process. As part of PROTO we will be hosting network events across Stockport, Leigh, Barnsley and Doncaster with an exciting line up of artists and installations. As part of the BEYOND Conference activities, FutureEverything is excited to present Cultural Accelerator, an innovative creative engagement programme bringing together Greater Manchester artists and private sector partners. The programme aims to unlock the transformative potential of collaboration, supporting both artistic and economic growth. Located at dock 10 mezzanine, Media City, the event offers a fascinating glimpse into the creative practices of artists working at the intersection of art and technology. Delve into imaginative concepts explored through the Cultural Accelerator programme, from the landscape of our dreams to interactive experiences inspired by mythology and the deep sea. These groundbreaking ideas will be presented through the presentation of cutting-edge digital works, live demonstrations and audio visual performances, and thought-provoking talks and discussions by Cultural Accelerator artists. Over the last few weeks, we have delivered Tech Labs on Motion Capture with Dr Lucie Lee Sykes using FREEMOCAP as part of our project, PROTO in Stockport, Leigh with The Turnpike Gallery, and Cast, Doncaster. We've had such a fun time experimenting using our bodies to capture movement through the free software, FREEMOCAP. Participants across the North were really inspired to utilise it in future projects and continue exploring its capabilities. Our final session with Lucie takes place at the Barnsley Civic - Barnsley Civic Enterprise LTD on Wednesday 20th November. As part of our journey to appoint Nature to our Board, we’re thrilled to be collaborating with Lawyers for Nature, leaders in the field of environmental law. This collective of dedicated lawyers, researchers, and campaigners works tirelessly to defend and uphold the rights of Nature. As the original architects (along with Earth Law Center) of the Nature on the Board intervention, their experience and legal expertise in including Nature in our space will be vital to our understanding of how we "represent" and are held accountable to Nature. Their involvement is a testament to the scope and integrity of this pathfinding project and to our commitment to drive systemic change. We're looking forward to working with their team for advice, research and guidance as we design our initial Nature-informed model as part of our 30th anniversary in 2025. Our Executive Director, Chris Wright, was delighted to be invited to deliver an Innovation Lab at The Future of Museums and Art Institutions workshop in Warsaw. In partnership with Narodowy Instytut Muzeów, British Council, 4CF The Futures Literacy Company, over two days we reimagined how museums and cultural institutions can play a key role in shaping our future in a constantly evolving world, with Chris facilitating collaborative and ideation practices from our Innovation Labs methodologies. Some challenges we explored: - Are we facing a loss of human unpredictability and spontaneity in artistic processes in favour of algorithmic predictability? - The necessity to redefine the concept of art and artistic value in the context of interspecies creativity. - Loss of direct contact with physical artworks and the problem of experience authenticity. - High environmental costs of maintaining digital infrastructure for art institutions and museums. As part of the Cultural Accelerator programme, these artists will be commissioned to premier three new major artworks in MediaCity this coming November, exploring psychiatric care, biotechnology, synthetic life and the race of human life on the moon.
