But lately, Caroline has noticed a remarkable shift. Instead of shutting down, this learner is showing incredible resilience. My child was out of mainstream school for the whole of 2024. It was hard, heartbreaking and humbling all at once. When your child doesn’t attend school, things unravel quite quickly. People ask questions you don't have answers for. Local authorities pry and threaten. Schools are quickly out of their depth. Professionals tell you to do things that make things worse. You have to scale back paid work. And then, there comes a point, where all the noise dies down and there is nobody left to help. After months of anxiety-inducing daily emails, pointless weekly checkpoint and stressful home visits, everyone disappears. We are in a very different place a year on. My child is happy. Time is the greatest healer. And as I look back on last year, I wanted to take this opportunity to publicly thank all the team at Gaia Learning. Gaia Learning is an online school for neurodivergent children who are struggling to attend mainstream school. Gaia Learning met my child where they were and provided an absolute lifeline for our family when things were so uncertain. They were our constant through a truly tough year for us as a family. Kate Longworth you have created something truly special. A huge thanks to all the Gaia educators who spent hours making my child feel safe enough to engage again.
