‘Does chronotype affect performance in rowing-specific and non-specific tasks?’ This is a wonderful dissection of a research paper by the science of rowing ⏱️Main findings: Morning types were faster by 4.8 seconds, evening types faster by 2 seconds over 2000m in the morning and evening, respectively. 🗓️Practical applications: 1) Consider individual chronotypes when building a schedule 2) Offer 1-2 sessions/week at different times 3) Group athletes according to chronotype 4) Allow athletes to choose their own time 5) Consider maturity status I love this ‘leave no stone unturned’ approach in considering an athlete’s natural rhythm. Today, I had the pleasure of attending the Genletics x Kyra Edwards: Tracking Biology for Olympic Success event. There were too many takeaways to mention on both a professional and personal level. Listening to Kyra’s journey and her research in tracking the menstrual cycle and its impact on training and performance in sport was truly inspiring. The panel discussion that followed, featuring Kyra Edwards, Dr. Katie Payne, Kate Maunsell and Colm Smith was equally enjoyable. I’d have been happy to continue the conversation for another couple of hours! The height of engineering performance will have a biological weak link. When should you set a lap time? When track temperature is optimal? When the tyres have warmed up? How about when the driver is at his best? Lotus Cars Europe just set the third fastest time at the green hell, the legendary Nürburgring 1927 GmbH & Co. KG in Germany. Congratulations Stuart Knight and his team. But could they go even faster? No doubt the driver Dirk Müller is absolutely incredible, but knowing how the body, the muscle fibres, and reaction times change throughout the day, are there marginal gains here that could make the difference?
