Since ChatGPT's public release in 2022, more and more humanitarians have started using #AI and testing AI-powered pilot projects. But a major challenge remains: the lack of shared information about projects leveraging AI for good. In her latest blog, UKHIH's AI Adviser Sarah Spencer explores our recently launched open-access directory with Glass.AI that consolidates information on current and past AI-driven humanitarian projects. Openly exchanging knowledge about safe and effective AI tools not only strengthens individual efforts but also accelerates innovation and trust across the sector. 🚨 We are excited to see the launch of the first-ever UNESCO Global Outlook on #Racism and #Discrimination. Our #AI technology in language understanding was used to uncover and track the evidence across countries and languages. 🌍 We discovered millions of news articles and reports and selected 600K for the final analysis. 👉🏼 You can read the Outlook here: https://lnkd.in/eUQd2S3E
📝 I am proud to be one of the authors of the first-ever, just launched UNESCO Global Outlook on Racism and Discrimination. ADG Gabriela Ramos was the force behind this whole initiative, which I developed with a fantastic team of colleagues including Euan Mackway-Jones, Francesca Borgonovi, @Qiu Qing Chan and Aishwarya Sehgal, with the financial support of the Ford Foundation. The report addresses critical gaps in #equality data and provides actionable insights into the entrenched, systemic, and evolving nature of #racism and discrimination worldwide. Drawing on over 600,000 data points collected for the period 2021 - mid 2024 through AI-powered analysis gathered by @Glass.AI, the report highlights the scale, complexity, and persistence of these issues, emphasizing both the urgency of action and the need for sustained vigilance to safeguard progress. Verbal abuse emerges as the most common form of #discrimination, accounting for 34% of cases globally, underscoring how harmful language perpetuates stereotypes and societal divides. Physical violence, while less frequent, represents 18% of cases, illustrating the tangible harm experienced by individuals. #Race emerges as the most frequent ground for #discrimination, appearing in 38% of cases globally, followed by #gender (33%), and #ethnicity (20%). Intersectionality—where overlapping identities compound vulnerabilities—is present in 21% of cases, with significant regional variations across the world. Institutions, including schools, workplaces, and law enforcement, are implicated in 27% of reported cases, demonstrating the societal biases are deeply embedded in structural systems. Systemic discrimination, reported in 12% of cases, dominates the most severe incidents, comprising 60% of the most damaging forms—highlighting the entrenched barriers embedded in #cultural, #economic, and #institutional frameworks. The fight against #racism and #discrimination starts from all of us becoming aware about how much ingrained stereotypes and socio-economic prejudices shape our thoughts and behaviours, and needs hard evidence able to guide individual and institutional actions alike. This is exactly what the Outlook does: to provide compelling evidence about where we are, to raise awareness about the harm done, and to remind us all that “business as usual” cannot be tolerated anymore. We should all ask ourselves: What if I were in their shoes (i.e. of the discriminated against)? Access the report here: https://lnkd.in/ejJ9z_8h or by scanning the QR code in the picture ! #UNESCO #Global Outlook #Racism #Discrimination #Diversity #Awareness #Human Rights #Intersectionality

🔍 Is LinkedIn Data as Reliable as We Think? Glass.AI’s data scientists analyzed LinkedIn’s #quality and #coverage across OECD - OCDE countries, uncovering significant limitations. 🌟 The Good LinkedIn provides unmatched data and insights about companies and professionals globally. It’s a key source for our AI when researching companies. ⚠️ The Not-So-Good 1️⃣ Limited Coverage in Some Countries: - In many OECD countries, 20–30% of 'registered' companies are on LinkedIn, which is OK as typically, a third of all companies in a given country have a website and employees. - Strong coverage in the #UK, #Canada, #Australia, #Germany and #France, while the #UnitedStates falls just below 20%. - For countries like #Japan and #SouthKorea, coverage is so low that LinkedIn is irrelevant as a source. We know this applies to #China too. 2️⃣ Inactive Company Profiles: - On average, 25% of all profiles are defunct businesses. - Breakdown: UK (30%), US (30%), France (31%), and Canada (33%). That’s a huge amount of noise! 3️⃣ Outdated and Static Information: - Many company profiles are static, with high-level descriptions, and lacking detailed information about the products or services of the companies. - Millions of company placeholders have no info about the companies. 4️⃣ Search Precision Issues: - Searching for terms like “cybersecurity” often yields just 20% relevant company results, the rest are irrelevant. This is also an issue with other company databases and sales intelligence tools. 💡 Why This Matters ➡️ #Marketers: Risk wasting ad budgets on inactive or irrelevant targets. ➡️ #Sales Teams: Prospect lists may be riddled with false positives. ➡️ #Researchers: Sector insights can be skewed, especially in certain sectors (e.g. manufacturing) or low-coverage countries. 🚀 The Bottom Line LinkedIn is an amazing tool. But it’s far from perfect. Dead companies, placeholders for company profiles, and coverage gaps dilute its effectiveness. Smart company research requires pairing LinkedIn with other sources. 🤔 We're unsure why LinkedIn retains so much low-quality data!

💡 Emerging technologies offer huge potential to improve humanitarian responses, but few have been widely adopted so far. We worked on this topic with our partners RAND Europe and Athena Infonomics. The research commissioned by the UK Humanitarian Innovation Hub looked at the challenges the sector will face in the next 5-10 years and explored the potential of emerging technologies. Our AI capability mapped the humanitarian sector globally (across countries and languages). We discovered and categorised 11K+ humanitarian organisations and uncovered evidence of their use of emerging technologies. 🌍 👉🏼 Full report here: https://lnkd.in/eSQzF8Bb #emtech #research #humanitarian #AI #sectors
