Updates

  • The GWI Global Water Index has been left in the black after a noisy month of overdelivering on results and underperforming on the back of Trump's actions. However, January’s stock market rout bounced GWI's Global Water Index back in line with the broader market this month. So, how did water stocks perform this month? The need to raise equity in the UK #watersector has never been greater, with Pennon Group Plc raising £500 million through a discounted rights issue, Southern Water planning to raise £900 million for upcoming investments, and Thames Water re-evaluating recapitalization proposals after a £3 billion liquidity package injection. Meanwhile, SJW Group’s share price surged after the long-running equity overhang vanished overnight, and Tetra Tech’s stock fell sharply after USAID cuts lead analysts to lower price targets. We've collated all the important information, details and insights in one helpful article — now with insight lists for: 🗺️ Regional trends 🌟 Top 10 best performers 💥 Top 10 worst performers 🚰 Monthly changes for the big water companies This is a must-read: https://lnkd.in/eW_jkknS

  • Chile utility deal marks first 'wastewater for green ammonia' project | Mariana Quaresma investigates how the new project aims to supply treated wastewater. Aguas Antofagasta , the utility supplying water in the city of Mejillones, has signed an agreement with MAE, becoming the first green hydrogen/ammonia project in Chile to rely on treated #Wastewater. ♻️ By repurposing the city’s wastewater, the Volta project not only mitigates environmental concerns over discharging primary treated wastewater into the sea but also aims to enhance marine life, benefiting tourism and the region’s traditional fishing industry. MAE is leveraging existing infrastructure to reduce the high upfront costs of green hydrogen and ammonia projects. The project’s strategic location in the industrial hub of Mejillones has enabled it to identify circular economy opportunities, such as wastewater reuse for the project's first phase. 🔄 Project development remains challenging, particularly regarding environmental impact assessments. • French water agencies outline bumper €13bn spending plan 🌊 France’s 6 regional water agencies have revealed a record 5 year spending package as the push to meet targets outlined in the national water plan gathers pace. The water agencies responsible for France’s six major river basins have boosted their spending plans by €850 million (+7%) over the next five years, when compared to the previous 2020-2025 period. The spending surge is underpinned by national priorities to reduce national water withdrawals by 10% by 2030, to clean up polluted water bodies and achieve compliance with new European wastewater regulations. • China is likely to fill the vacuum left by an increasingly isolationist US. It is a double-edged sword for Asian water funding, argues Charles Bodhi. With the recent shock policies coming out of the White House, the realities for Asian water are becoming starker. The Asian Development Bank (ADB) warns of a $430B annual shortfall in climate adaptation and water infrastructure funding. Meanwhile, the near shutdown of USAID leaves a growing investment void—one that China may step in to fill, raising concerns over debt dependency. As Washington pulls back, what’s next for Asian water financing? • Increasing demand from high-tech industries is triggering US cities to rapidly expand their #WaterSupply infrastructure as municipalities struggle with local economic growth and water availability. Industrial development incentivised under the Inflation Reduction and CHIPS act, combined with AI-driven data centre buildouts, is increasingly testing the resiliency of municipal supplies as America’s reshoring efforts accelerate. “Even in traditionally water-rich regions, there's a lot of communities that are constrained: they've got the workforce, they've got cheap land, they've got access to logistics and cheap power, but they don’t have enough water,” observed Troy Walker, water reuse practice leader at Hazen and Sawyer. The growing pressure on water systems is already evident across several communities pursuing major industrial developments. How is the sector adapting? Luke Bratt investigates.
