En ya 13 años que llevo en la industria, hay un tema que cada vez me obsesiona más, porque está en el centro de cualquier desarrollo futuro de la industria del deporte, y porque comparativamente con otras industrias, incluso del entretenimiento, ésta está muy atrasada. Me impresiona ver la falta de conocimiento de las audiencias. No sólo de tamaño y demografía (que sería lo mínimo y que se puede estimar en base a estudios, algunos de ellos de hace años, y a seguidores de redes sociales), sino sobre todo a nivel de actitudes y comportamiento. Este conocimiento de la audiencia de un soporte deportivo y el tratamiento de datos de primera fuente (first party data), debiera ayudar a responder muchas preguntas, entre ellas: - ¿Puedo segmentar a la audiencia (los fans) de alguna forma? ¿Hay grupos que se comporten de forma similar? - ¿Qué productos compran? ¿ Con qué frecuencia? - ¿Qué necesitan del soporte deportivo? - ¿Cuáles son las experiencias más valoradas? ¿Las peor evaluadas? - ¿Cómo son evaluados mis sponsors? - ¿Cómo puedo ayudar a mis sponsors a activar mejor su auspicio? ¿Qué necesita la audiencia de ellos? - ¿Hay espacio para el desarrollo de nueos productos? ¿Cuáles? - ¿Cuál es la mejor forma de promocionar nuevos productos? - ¿Cómo comunicarme con cada segmento de fans? Éstas son sólo algunas preguntas que se podrían responder.   • Just before the start of Paris 2024, we asked The Fan Panel their thoughts on the Olympics and the ongoing Paris 2024 event. Here is what they told us… Key takeaways: 1️⃣ 40% said the Olympics is the biggest sporting event in the world – 55% said it one of the biggest 2️⃣ Majority of fans plan to watch live and highlights via TV, with half planning to watch every day – Unsurprisingly, 94% believe it is very important that the Olympics remains available to watch on free-to-air TV 3️⃣ Relatively low awareness and interest in The Olympics Channel 4️⃣ Athletics, Track Cycling, and Swimming were ranked the top events fans were interested in watching 5️⃣ Rowing, Canoe Slalom, Mountain Biking, and Diving were ranked as the top sports that fans only engage with during the Olympics 6️⃣ Squash, Cricket, and Bowling are the events fans would like to see added to future Olympic Games Interest in Paris 2024: Overall, 84% say they are as interested in the Paris Olympics as previous Games they have followed – 7% are more interested and 9% are less interested. Event engagement: ⏺ 91% will watch the event live on TV 📺 ⏺ 74% will watch highlights ⏺ 54% will follow through news channels (e.g. BBC News, Sky Sports News) ⏺ 54% will follow updates online (e.g. via BBC Sport or other websites) 📱 Almost half (49%) of fans plan to watch live coverage of the Olympics every day, with a further 32% planning to watch most days. The Olympics Channel: 30% are aware of the channel. After all users were informed of what the channels offers, only 16% say they are likely to use it throughout the Games. The content fans would most like to see on the Olympics Channel is: 1) Live coverage – 85% 2) Highlights of events – 63% 3) Behind the scenes content – 36% 4) Interviews with athletes – 31% 5) Exclusive features with athletes/teams – 24% Olympics Events: The events which members are most interested in watching at the Olympics are: 👟 Athletics – 90% 🚴♀️ Track Cycling – 67% 🏊♂️ Swimming – 67% 🚣♀️ Rowing – 59% 🏉 Rugby Sevens – 52% 🚵♂️ Road Cycling – 52% 🏊♀️ 🚵♂️ 👟 Triathlon – 50% Of the events fans will follow, we asked which of them are sports they would only watch/follow at the Olympics and not outside of the Games. The top sports selected here were Rowing – 27%, Canoe Slalom – 25%, Mountain Biking – 23% and Diving – 23%.   • The final focus of the week on the major sporting events that have taken place in 2024 is UEFA EURO 2024 ⚽. All insights are generated from Goodform's Fan Panel. How fans rated the event: 💯 ⏺ Overall rating: 6.6 out of 10 Event element ratings (% who rated good or very good): 📺 Coverage: 81% 📣 Atmosphere / excitement: 64% 🗓 Organisation / scheduling: 66% ⚽ Quality of football: 30% Overall enjoyment score and rating of the quality of football suggests fans don’t think the Euro’s lived up to expectations, and that the standard fell short of what fans hoped to see. We asked which teams disappointed fans the most in Euro 2024: ⬇ The top team was England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 at 27% ⬇ Followed by Italy 🇮🇹 at 20% ⬇ And France 🇫🇷 at 16% By contrast, the teams which surprised most were: ⬆ Georgia 🇬🇪 at 31% ⬆ Turkey 🇹🇷 at 18% Comparing Euro 2024 to other events: ⏺ 12% say Euro 2024 was one of their favourite events of 2024 ⏺ A further 40% say it was ‘one of their favourite events’ Comparing to previous Euros Championships: ⏺ 40% of fans felt the tournament was worse ⏺ 47% thought it was ‘as good’ ⏺ Only 14% think Euro 2024 was better than previous Championships We also asked about the quality of refereeing, and the use of VAR at Euro 2024. Standard of refereeing: fans rated the standard of refereeing at the tournament 7.1 out of 10, on average. VAR: The use of VAR at 2024 was rated 6.7 out of 10. Yesterday we focused on Wimbledon, today we look at...The Open ⛳ How fans rated the event: 💯 ⏺ Overall rating: 7.7 out of 10 Event element ratings (% who rated good or very good): 📺 Coverage: 70% 📣 Atmosphere / excitement: 63% 🗓 Organisation / scheduling: 73% 🏌♂️ Quality of golf: 78% ⏺ 35% say The Open was ‘one of their favourite’ sports events of 2024. ⏺ The majority of fans (43%) rated it about the same as previous year’s. ⏺ 27% thought it was better. ⏺ 25% thought it was worse. The impact on golf engagement: ⏺ 39% of respondents say watching The Open has made them more likely to follow golf for the rest of 2024.   • With the Paris Olympics now in full swing, we wanted to share some fan insights from Goodform's Fan Panel on some of the other major sporting events that have already taken place in 2024. This week we'll focus on Wimbledon, The Open, and UEFA EURO 2024. First up...Wimbledon 🎾 Overall ratings: ✅ ⏺ Men’s: 7.8 out of 10 (lower than the 8.3 rating the 2023 Men’s Championship received) ⏺ Women’s: 7.4 out of 10 (higher than the 7.3 rating the 2023 Women’s Championship received) ⏺ Doubles: 7.2 out of 10 (lower than the 7.6 rating the 2023 Doubles Championship received) Event element ratings (% who rated good or very good): 📺 Coverage: 90% (up from 80% in our 2023 post-event survey) 🎾 Quality of tennis: 86% (same score as our 2023 post-event survey) 🗓 Organisation / scheduling: 78% (up from 59% in our 2023 post-event survey) 📣 Atmosphere / excitement: 71% (slightly down from 73% in our 2023 post-event survey) 16% believe this year’s Wimbledon has been better than previous editions – whilst 59% felt it was about the same. In the survey we also asked about a few of the main talking points from the Championships: ⏺ Raducanu & Murray doubles withdrawal: 46% agreed with Emma Raducanu’s decision to withdraw, with only 24% saying they disagreed. ⏺ Djokovic’s reaction to the crowd: 50% of fans said they were negative about Djokovic’s reaction to the Centre Court crowd after his match against Holger Rune – only 9% were positive. ⏺ Murray’s All England Club Triumphs: Of Andy Murray’s three memorable successes at the Wimbledon Club, his victory against Djokovic in the 2012 final was cited as his greatest by 72% of respondents. And lastly, 44% said they are more likely to watch tennis in the rest of 2024 after following Wimbledon which highlights the impact that the tournament has on engagement with the sport in general.
