*SIGN UP FOR FREE WEBINAR HAPPENING TOMORROW* Is your company on a sustainability journey, but having trouble communicating how it's becoming greener? We can help you speak to your sustainability efforts confidently, without misleading your audience. Greenwashing is defined as "a business using advertising and public messaging to appear more climate-friendly and environmentally sustainable than it really is". This practice is becoming increasingly common (intentionally or unintentionally), and this webinar will teach you how to avoid it. Better Futures is working with Founder of Spinning Red, Natasha Plowman, a communications director, consultant & strategist. She will take businesses through the key elements of greenwashing, the UK's regulations, and the steps to communicate your green efforts correctly & authentically. Natasha has extensive experience in helping companies with their narrative/message development (and execution), campaign development, and their sustainability and ESG communications. Last week, four insightful funders and investors spoke to 50 sustainability founders and leaders from across London at our #NetZero #SocialFounders event about “Funding a Sustainable Future”. Our speakers reinforced 3 themes: - the importance of having a #hybrid mix of income to underpin and grow #sustainability initiatives - the key role of the #founder in making the case to funders and investors, and - the unique role of #SocialImpact organisations in building trust and behaviour change in communities. Dr Afsheen Rashid MBE, is Co-Founder & CEO of Repowering London, whose business model puts people at the heart of the energy system. “Tech is often the bling, and you’re not going to get to Net Zero if you don’t bring people and communities with you,” argued Afsheen. Afsheen emphasised the importance of behaviour change in reaching Net Zero, “and for that to happen you must have trust. People are less likely to trust private companies and Local Authorities… social impact organisations are trusted intermediaries in the community.” Nick Gardner, heads up The National Lottery Community Fund’s £100 million #ClimateActionFund, and is an experienced #SocialFounder of ActionFunder and previously Semble. Nick wants climate action funding bids “to bring additional co-benefits to communities, including healthier economies and people, and #ClimateJustice.” “We’re looking for visionary people who can see a system change. We’re looking for shifts in the system model. It’s about the ability to sell that vision.” Key to delivering #impact is to work with organisations who know “how to reach outside the green bubble… to create relevance to people and their lives.” Nick Lyth, Founder & President, Green Angel Ventures, gave us some tough warnings for why many pitches fail: “Often it’s the people (bidding!), being difficult and unresponsive - if they are too busy to respond then how are they going to manage to run a business? The flip side is those who don’t listen - they keep saying ‘No, we don’t want to do it like that…” Adapting to, and building resilience to, the after-effects of #ClimateChange is key, and stressed the importance of securing public sector funds, e.g. Innovate UK, to deliver impact at scale. Stefanie Mulder, Accelerator Manager, Startup Discovery School, outlined the benefits of an accelerator, and how to be accepted onto one. SDS connects founders with funders, giving exposure to key stakeholders and #SustainableFinance, but “the founder is the one big thing - are they the right founder to be building the solution?” And finally, for me, as founder of Media Trust, Together TV and now Social Founders, investing in supporting the social impact founders’ who build trust, impact and deliver climate change solutions and behaviour change across our communities is key. Thank you to Green Business Action, to JLL’s global Head of Sustainability Learning, Luke Wynne, to Kata Ovari, our chair and event organiser. And to our 4 speakers.
