  • Celebrating one year of Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) 🎉🌿   We're proud to celebrate the success of portfolio company Environment Bank in our Sustainable Infrastructure strategy. Environment Bank is a leader in delivering off-site BNG, as they help restore vital habitats and support sustainable development across the country.   It is a year since Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG), a crucial piece of environmental legislation in England, came into effect. In that time Environment Bank has already:   🌱 Legally secured over 2,000 acres of land in partnership with local farmers 🦋 Generated over 5,000 off-site Biodiversity Units for developers to purchase 📈 Received almost 8,000 open Biodiversity Unit enquiries 🏗️ Supported over 1,000 development projects across a vast range of sectors in England - with 55% being residential 📍 Provided local or adjacent Biodiversity Units for over 70% of these projects 📜 Registered more than 40% of Natural England’s biodiversity gain sites – with more from their national network to come!   Importantly, all of these benefits have been delivered at zero cost to the Government and zero impact on new housebuilding. #UKGrowth Over the past year, Environment Bank has already worked with major customers such as Panattoni UK, National Grid, Aldi UK, most of the major housebuilders and even Everton Football Club, helping them meet their BNG requirements while restoring nature at scale.   Read more >> https://lnkd.in/ebw4MFmM   #BiodiversityNetGain #BNG #HabitatBanking #SustainableDevelopment

How can farming work with nature? How can we manage our resources sustainably? How do we work with communities? How can we help green spaces thrive? These are all questions that are central to the work of the Church Commissioners alongside our financial objectives to support the Mission and Ministry of the Church of England. We are pleased to announce the launch of the 'Faith in our Future' video series, which explores the diverse range of land that makes up part of our investment portfolio. Throughout the series, we speak to tenants, communities, partners, and the experts we work with, to hear about the challenges they face and the initiatives we're working on to support the environment and communities. From agriculture, forestry, and renewable energy to housing and commercial developments, learn how we ensure our land is managed in a sustainable way. The first two episodes focus on our Forestry and Farmland portfolios and are available now. Future episodes will look at our Development Land and Built Environment & Infrastructure portfolios.   Our role as a steward for this land is integral to our approach. • “The creation of a UK green taxonomy is a necessary and critical step towards enhancing transparency, tackling greenwashing and directing capital towards sustainable investments” 💬   Hyewon Kong, CFA, Sustainable Investment Director, comments on the government’s consultation into a UK green taxonomy, highlighting its importance to provide investor clarity in an article for Sustainable Views. HM Treasury launched its consultation on the creation of a green taxonomy last November. It aims to establish whether a UK green taxonomy can be a useful tool in contributing to the UK delivering a world-leading sustainable finance framework. Although Hyewon supports the implementation of such a taxonomy, she stressed the importance of the framework being clear, practical and science-based, avoiding excessive complexity that could hinder adoption. • “We are at the dawn of a significant new super cycle - one with immense potential to drive growth and deliver nature positive impact on a global scale” 🌱🚀   Peter Bachmann, Managing Director of Sustainable Infrastructure, discusses the future of nature investing, vertical farming and international expansion in his article for IPE Real Assets.   The UK Government’s implementation of biodiversity net gain (BNG) legislation in February 2024 provided the regulatory clarity needed to unlock the potential of nature-based solutions as a scalable and impactful investment opportunity in England.   We now operate the largest national network of #habitatbanks through portfolio company Environment Bank, who have successfully completed over 50 transactions with major companies, including National Grid, Panattoni and Galliard Homes.   Peter highlights that the key focus for 2025 will be to explore the internalisation of our strategy, with North America, the Middle East, and Europe emerging as priority regions for growth.   Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/e6RgX7uH   #verticalfarming #sustainableinfrastructure

  • “We have created a market and developed thousands of acres of habitat banks. These are woodlands, grasslands and wetlands on depleted land which has been over farmed and can no longer support agriculture” 💬🌳🦋   Peter Bachmann, Managing Director, Sustainable Infrastructure, discusses the progress being made to create markets for biodiversity units, in an article featured in the IPE Real Assets Natural Capital Report.   Currently, England is the only country in the world with a compliance Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) market, which over the next three years is estimated to be worth £2bn.   Our work with habitat bank providers like Environment Bank, helps to remediate land to create nature corridors and meet the anticipated demand from developers for BNG credits, mandated by the 2021 Environment Act, whilst providing attractive returns to investors.   Peter comments: “So far, we have cultivated 4,000 acres. Our plan is ultimately to develop more than 10,000 acres for new habitats to meet BNG requirements”.   Click here to read the full article: https://lnkd.in/eGZJGxSy   #habitatbanks #biodiversity #BNG
