“Over the next few years, if natural capital is to become a really established asset class… as an industry we’ve got to create really long-term fundable projects for nature restoration. Then the world can harness the power of private capital into restoring nature.” 💬🌳🦋 Peter Bachmann, Managing Director, Sustainable Infrastructure, comments on the outcome of COP16 and the ongoing challenge to create investable nature projects in an article for IPE Real Assets. The summit brought together an estimated 5,000 businesses, signalling the growing recognition of biodiversity as a critical business issue. There is a growing emphasis on improving supply chains and minimising company impacts on #biodiversity, with #carboncredits being positioned as a voluntary tool for additional positive action. However, Peter highlighted the need for more countries to actively participate in the implementation of biodiversity with only 44 out of 196 producing a biodiversity plan. https://lnkd.in/eqXWccnX #naturalcapital

“Institutional investors are increasingly recognising the ability of forestry investments to provide compelling financial returns while delivering a positive impact in terms of emissions, biodiversity and job creation in rural communities.” 🌳💬 Oliver Hughes, Managing Director, Forestry, discusses the importance of sustainable forestry investments in the evolving natural capital asset class with Lauren Mills in an article for IPE Real Assets. He highlights the role of #biodiversity in #forestry which is evident at Brycheiniog forest, located in Wales and managed by Gresham House. The forest provides nature corridors for species in a landscape with fragmented woodland cover. Looking forward, Olly calls for the establishment of globally recognised KPIs to streamline the measurement of biodiversity in forests and solidify investor confidence in the asset class, saying: “Once you monitor it, you can enhance it. Once you enhance it, you can value it.” https://lnkd.in/eBtdMXqU #naturalcapital | Capital at risk. Past performance is not necessarily a guide to future performance.

Share buybacks as a capital allocation tool 🪛 In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic and persistent investor outflows from UK equities, UK-listed companies have increasingly turned to share buybacks as a strategic capital allocation tool. In some instances buyback activity can be an important contributor to long-term value creation through enhanced returns on equity, earnings per share and dividend yields. Notably within the Gresham House public equities portfolio, companies such as Mears Group PLC and Balfour Beatty plc have executed successful buyback programmes that have led to substantial shareholder returns. However, for the UK market in aggregate, the data call into question whether recent increased buyback activity is best aligned with long-term shareholder interests, and in some instances other short-term incentives may be at play.
