At Harper, we're on a mission to make shopping for fashion online a better experience for both consumers and retailers. Our journey began in London in 2017, born out of personal frustrations with the limitations of online fashion shopping — from the inability to touch and feel items to the hassle of returns. We solve these challenges with our suite of elevated Try Before You Buy experiences, designed to bring the in-store experience to online shoppers while driving profitable growth for retailers.     Black Friday has transformed from a single-day shopping event into a month-long retail frenzy. In 2023, British consumers spent £9.4 billion over the Black Friday weekend, with over 60% of purchases made online. For eCommerce business, the inevitable challenge of growing order volumes is growing return rates and the costs that come with it. According to the The Business of Fashion’s Returns Report, the largest cost associated with returns stems from discounting and liquidation—a problem magnified by Black Friday’s evolution into "Black November." A key driver of Discounting & Liquidation is how long it takes for returns to be made by customers and processed. For a retailer with a 30-day returns period and a 30% return rate, up to one-third of items sold between October and December are likely to end up subject to heavy discounts and significant margin losses. So what strategies can retailers implement to reintegrate returned stock faster and more efficiently? A couple of proven strategies worth considering: 1. Reduce return window to 14 days: 21% of retailers now offer a 14 day return window to improve stock circulation and minimise the impact of discounting and liquidation (rising to 40% of brands in the luxury segment).  2. Incentivise faster returns: Offer free returns for returns within 14 days and a small returns fee for returns beyond 14 days. This can be a nice way to mitigate the cost of discounting and liquidation focusing on the orders where the impact is higher. 3. Offer a Try for 5 Days service: Retailers offering a Try for 5 Days service give customers the ability to try items without upfront payment for up to 5 days. On top of supporting new customer conversion and encouraging basket building, customers using the service to return their unwanted items up to 3x faster than standard orders, taking just 3.8 days on average.
