HJP closes its office at lunchtime tomorrow, Christmas Eve, and opens again on Thursday 2nd January 2025. We are all having a lovely long break to really enjoy the festive season and recharge ready for a new year. For many people Christmas also comes with a big turkey dinner. But what do we really know about these funny looking birds? We are accountants, after all, so we love numbers, especially a tasty statistic: ⚖ The world's biggest turkey weighed 39Kg 😎 They can see 3 times better than humans 🦃 An adult can have 5,000 to 6,000 feathers 💨A wild turkey can run 25 miles per hour and fly short distances But we also have a caring side: 😍 Their heads change colour to display emotion - the more intense the colour the more emotion. HMRC will give you a tax deduction for having a work party! 🎈Who knew? Don't get too excited though as, in true HMRC style, this comes with red tape and lots of strings. The party or social event must: ✔ be open to every employee ✔ cost less than £150 per person (including the VAT) There can be more than one social event a year but the combined cost must be no more than £150 (including VAT). Well, that is a load of jargon and I am about to scroll by... 🤪 HJP HATE using accounting and tax jargon as we know that our clients can find this language off-putting and one of our aims is for our clients to love accounting as much as we do. 🤗 Yes we know this aim is probably not achievable 😉- but it is good to have ambitious goals (the magic of goal setting is a whole other post!). Let us break this down. 🙏 If a director owes money to their company, and does not pay this back within 9 months of the company's year end, then the tax office want some tax. 💸 The tax they want is 33.75% of whatever the director’s loan amount is. (for example if the director borrows £20,000 then HMRC want £6,750). If you pay back your director’s loan then HMRC give this tax back, albeit quite a while later, and they will need a bit of cajoling. 💪 🧐 One way to look at this is, if you want to borrow money from your company, then you have to lend some to the tax office too. ✔ Tips - factor the cashflow of paying this amount to HMRC into your planning when you take a loan and make sure you remember to ask for it back from them when you have paid your loan back. This is not an automatic process with HMRC so keep good records. 📄 Don't let Section 455 tax catch you off guard!
