It was great to speak at the Hellenic Tech Network Robotics & AI Event last night! Big thanks to Marina Antoniou, Nikol Konstantaropoulou and Georgios Dagkoulis for inviting me and bringing together such a great room of people. It was an honor to sit beside such an esteemed panel, and to speak openly about not only the goods, but also the challenges and concerns around robotics, AI and automation in general. I even got to speak about Dakos at at tech event....

We've all experienced how AI has transformed our digital lives recently. This got me wondering… how close are we to seeing that same level of change in our physical world? So to get some answers I attended an event on AI & robotics last night. It was fascinating to hear how AI is enabling robots to step beyond process driven tasks into truly unpredictable environments like search & rescue, transportation, restaurants, and healthcare. Here are some of the things I jotted down from the panel discussion: 🔹 Cars are the most underutilised asset we own. Tesla’s robo-taxi vision imagines a world where driverless cars generate revenue while you're not using them, essentially functioning as taxis. This could eliminate parking lots, replacing them with parks and green spaces, while ensuring cars are used 100% of the time. 🔹 Robots have been in warehouses for years, but mainly for predictable, repetitive tasks. Now, with AI’s ability to handle chaos, robots are moving into more complex logistics work, like loading and unloading - tasks that previously had to be done by humans. 🔹 Service robots are already here – Restaurants & hotels are using robots to streamline work, and currently venues using robots are seeing an increase in revenue, and even boost on tips - I am curious to see what happens to the latter two when the novelty wears off. 🔹 Adoption varies globally – Culture plays a huge role. Countries where robots have been part of childhood stories and pop culture (e.g., in East Asia) tend to embrace them more readily in real life too. 🔹 Waste & sustainability will be huge challenges as robots and batteries powering AI age out. Big thanks to Hellenic Tech Network for organising and the amazing panelists: Stam Athiniotis from Tesla Autopilot, Yassir Al-Refaie from STIQ Ltd, Georgios Dagkoulis from Hyster-Yale, Cenk Güler from Keenon Robotics, Dr Dimitrios Kanoulas, professor in Robotics and AI, from UCL.

Had a great time at the Hellenic Tech Network event, of which I am a member, discussing robotics and AI and how they are shaping our daily lives. The panel brought together industry experts and researchers to explore the impact of AI on jobs, innovation, and society. Some key takeaways from the discussion: (1) AI is redefining job roles and the demand for new skills. (2) Robotics is becoming more integrated into everyday life. (3) Ethical and societal considerations remain crucial for AI adoption. This discussion strongly connects with my PhD research on the impact of AI skills on the UK’s income distribution. As AI-driven roles become more prominent, it is essential to understand how these technological shifts influence wages, job opportunities, and economic inequality. Events like this provide valuable insights from both industry and academia, helping to bridge the gap between research and real-world applications. Special thanks to Hellenic Tech Network for organising such an insightful event and to all the panellists, especially Marina Antoniou, Executive Board Member & University of Oxford Fintech Graduate, Professor Dimitrios Kanoulas from UCL as well as Stam Athiniotis from Tesla, and attendees for the engaging discussions. Looking forward to continuing the conversation on the future of AI and technology. #HellenicTech #AI #Robotics #FutureOfWork #TechInnovation #AIJobs #LabourEconomics #IncomeDistribution #LondonTech
